So what do people think of this cold snap? Frost and cold air or is there a chance of the magic s word?

Still 5 days or so yet so it's going to be a case of wait and see how things go over the coming days at the moment I'd say, turning much colder with overnight frosts if skies clear and winds fall light snow is likely, but perhaps more for high ground Pennines North Yorkshire Moors ect whilst cold day time temps will probably be a bit too high for lower levels

Hopefully overnight frosts and dry weather.. Judging by your location I wouldn't rule out possible snow showers that's if it becomes a direct airflow from the North.. That is what I want a weekend hopefully of sunshine and no showers.. The last 2 weeks of cold fronts and unstable air with non stop showers has done my head in and a weekend of a rain also not helping.. Sadly when one front passes in my location another one is waiting..

There isn't much mention of snow in the outlook, but into next week looks chilly and drier too so that seems an improvement.
There'll be a few flakes about by next weekend - even lower down might see something.

It's been very windy here through the night with gusts to 58mph.
Surprising how things have dried up too, but we *only* had about 10mm the previous 24 hours.
Fields look very green for the time of year, only had one very slight frost so far - about a month a go, and things have been growing in the recent 15C days.

Two thoughts are running through my head with this rain

1. If only you'd came a few days later with those northerlies - imagine the snow.

2. It's just about killed the chance of any snow we do get at the weekend lying.

GFS now picking something up for the early hours of Saturday morning.

North sea SST'S are above normal for the time of year so should be some impressive convection, but how far will it make it inland is always the question.

Saturday looks seriously cold with temperatures only a couple of degrees above freezing and still very windy.
There'll be some snowflakes swirling here at some point but the chance seems to melt away by midday Sunday.

Id say your in one of the best positions in the UK Col. Late Friday evening we see a small shortwave passing southwards and cold NNE winds will follow and likely to last around 24-36 hours varying at times but I can imagine there will be some decent snow totals over the NYM. Will be heading onto the Dalby Forest tracks on Saturday afternoon to test my new winter tires! Look forward to seeing your webcam and any pictures you may take over the weekend.

Early hours of Saturday morning still looks like the best chance of something wintry with a trough heading our way from the North-east.

Thats a lovely look fax chart! Not only is there a trough but I can imagine as you stated earlier with warm SST's and cold uppers there should be some nice convection, combine that with the overnight period we could have a nice white blanket Sat morning :)

Issued at:
1045 on Thu 19 Nov 2015

Valid from:
1600 on Fri 20 Nov 2015

Valid to:
1000 on Sat 21 Nov 2015

A band of rain, sleet and snow will move south across northern and eastern Scotland later on Friday, then into the Borders and northeast England on Friday night. The snow will mainly affect high ground at first but will fall to lower levels on Friday night. 1-4 cm is likely at some lower levels but with 5-10 cm above 150 m, with drifting in the strong to gale force north or northwesterly winds. Indeed severe gales with gusts to 60 mph could bring a short period of blizzard conditions to the highest routes later Friday evening and overnight. The more persistent snow and strong winds will have cleared by Saturday morning but ice will be an additional hazard by then, particularly for higher level routes.

Please be aware of the likelihood of some difficult driving conditions and some travel disruption. A major (but temporary) change of weather type will see the winds swing into a more northerly direction, pulling down much colder air across the whole of Britain and western Europe, after what has been an exceptionally mild first half of November. Wintry showers will spread to many northern areas in particular and night frosts will become much more widespread.

Within this northerly flow, a small but quite active low pressure system is expected to develop and transfer south bringing more widespread wintry conditions and strong to gale force winds. At present details of both the snow amounts and wind strengths are uncertain, and so expect updates to the warning.

Yellow warning issued for strong winds

Issued at: 1153 on Thu 19 Nov 2015

Valid from: 2100 on Fri 20 Nov 2015

Valid to: 1500 on Sat 21 Nov 2015

A swathe of gale force north to northwesterly winds, accompanied by a band of rain and snow, will move south across much of central and southern Britain on Friday night and Saturday. Wind gusts of 50-60 mph are likely, with a lower likelihood of 60-70 mph gusts, perhaps most likely in exposed parts of east coastal England. In any one area, the strongest winds will last for only a few hours, clearing last from southeastern areas of England. Additionally, some of the snow may settle, this more likely over some of the high ground, for example in north Wales, but there is a possibility of temporary settling snow even at low levels. The worst affected areas may see a few cm but on current evidence, most places will see little if any lying snow. On Saturday morning, ice will be an additional hazard, particularly for higher level routes. Please be aware of the likelihood of some difficult driving conditions and possible travel disruption.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A major (but temporary) change of weather type will see the winds swing into a more northerly direction, pulling down much colder air across the whole of Britain and western Europe, after what has been an exceptionally mild first half of November. Wintry showers will spread to many northern areas in particular and night frosts will become much more widespread. Within this northerly flow, a small but quite active low pressure system is expected to develop and transfer south bringing more widespread wintry conditions and gale force winds. In the area covered by this warning, it is the winds that are currently judged to be more likely to produce some impacts, particularly given the northerly direction. At present details of both wind strengths and snow amounts are uncertain, and so look out for updates to this warning.

Whats people thinking on these charts -5 uppers in November is marginal for snow anybody know what the dew points will be, i think we will get a bit of rain before it turns to sleet/snow on lower ground which will scupper any chance of a white blanket morning for a lot of us

So here we are, another winter impending and the first taste of it to come this weekend.

As it happens 9 times out of 10 it's going to be marginal! With a band of snow/sleet/rain heading down from the North from the early hours of Saturday, areas with a bit of height and away from the coasts could do well, with low levels also in a with a chance if conditions fall onto the right side of the marginal.

And as for winter,

http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/north-east-weather-blizzards-hit-10466285

As quoted from the above article, "North East road workers have stockpiled thousands of tonnes of salt in preparation for what could be the hardest winter in years."

Maybe they know something we don't!

Dewpoints above 0 near the coast for a short while thanks to more of an onshore wind.

Probably come down to now-casting as per usual.

It's looking like at my location (and those with similar height) tonight/ early tomorrow is going to be a washout, as a pocket of slightly warmer uppers moves through with the precipitation. although snow could fall as the band of precipitation approaches/clears.

Best chance I reckon is late morning where there is a chance of catching a snow shower, with more favourable conditions of uppers at around -8 and dewpoints dropping back below freezing.
