Impressive rainfall totals possibly mounting up for Cumbria - doesn't seem to long since we were outside the Swan Hiotel at Newby Bridge wondering when it will rain.

Meanwhile next weekend looks "interesting". :D

Part of me wants to experience all the rain, Ashway gap near me looks amazing with a raging torrent cascading down the hills. But I wouldn't want all the damaging floods. For now though the Manchester area being protected by the rain shadow.

Showers on and off here all night and steady rain for the last couple of hours and the main deluge isn't even due until this afternoon.

With watercourses already running quite high and if the forecasted amounts fall we will probably be looking at some extensive flooding.

Only time will tell but, unlike snow which only affects the areas receiving it, rain can cause problems where little has actually fallen.

Flood alerts in place

Latest Information:

We have experienced some very wet weather over the last few days, river and lake levels remain high. Catchments are very wet and remain saturated. The forecast for the weekend is for very heavy and persistent rain with main areas affected being South and West Lakes however, Cumbria more widely will see some significant rainfall. The rain is expected to arrive into the County from lunchtime today and will continue to be persistent overnight and throughout tomorrow. We forecast for significant rainfall totals in the region and expect to see flooding to areas across Cumbria. We advise you take some preparatory actions by:- Checking vulnerable family, friends and neighbours Install flood protection measures to your property if you have them Only travel if necessary and do not drive through flood water Considering to activate or get ready to activate your community emergency plan Keeping a check on Environment Agency website www.gov.uk/flood

Oh dear a worrying outlook and echos of Nov 2009 - hope we don't see a repeat but wouldn't be surprised given expected totals and the state of the rivers around here. The river Kent was swollen to very high levels early this week and that was after perhaps only half the rainfall we are expecting.

It's not looking good for the Lakes and Cumbria in general and certainly not a day for being up on the high fells although no doubt some will see crossing swollen watercourses as a challenge.
