Bright this morning with some sunny spells, much cloudier this afternoon as a thunderstorm passed nearby, but largely kept it dry, even though nearby areas had a downpour.

Hot and dry with sunny spells, somewhat cloudier around lunchtime resulting in a dip in the temperature early afternoon.  Although exceptionally hot the wind seemed to take the edge off the temperature, particularly in the morning when 31C at 11am actually didn't feel that hot.  A second lengthy spell of sunshine in the afternoon eventually gave us the hottest day here since 19 July 2006 (34.5).  Maximum 34.1, minimum 19.3.  Wind moderate SE.

Overall an unpleasant day thankfully the lorry full of 150 computers turned up early this morning before the heat kicked in.

An exceptionally hot day. The maximum of 30.6c is the second highest I've recorded at this site in the last 38 years and only the 3rd time 30c has been exceeded although it's likely it would have just been exceeded once in August 1975 and once again in July 1976 when I kept records at a nearby but much lower site.

The all time record of 31.7c on August 3rd 1990 still stands but today has obliterated the previous July record of 28.5c.

Sunny intervals throughout the day but also some large areas of Ac. Thunder was heard to the east and west of the site between 1215 and 1245 g.m.t but only a few spots of rain fell here.

At 1800 g.m.t

Temp: 27.6c

Max' today: 30.6c

Min last night: 16.5c

Grass min: 12.0c

Rainfall from 0800-1800 g.m.t: Trace

Sunshine today so far: 7.28 hrs

Mean wind speed: 4 mph S

Highest gust today: 27 mph SE at 1150 g.m.t

7 oktas Ac and Ci

Vis: 65 km.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall.
