Doors open or shut in a heatwave?

Keep your curtains and windows shut until the temperature outside cools to an acceptable level.

Our aircon failed a couple of weeks ago when it topped 45c outside. The best room was the maids room (spare room to us) which has no windows. My daughter had to sleep in there and I was tempted to join her

I keep blinds and curtains shut all day to stop the sun from heating things up more.

A frozen hot water bottle is so good, but I never remember to freeze one on time.

I tend to have the fan on constantly and when it gets too unbearable, I spray my face, legs and arms with cold water before sitting directly in front of the fan.

If all above fail, empty chest freezer and climb in!

Air con on two out of our four buses failed on the way back on school trip, my trusty water spray bottle cooled down grateful students. Very glad to have a cooler evening to enjoy now.

I think the answer to this is dependent on any wind.  Ultimately also if the air outside is hotter or cooler than inside.

Rule of thumb I apply is.

If its cooler outside but sunny, open windows, doors but keep curtains shut.

If its cooler and windy even with it been sunny also open curtains.

If is hotter, keep windows and doors shut, if its sunny also shut curtains.

The tough one is.

What if its hotter but also windy (something that never happens here in leicester).

Turns out blackout curtains work wonders! Shut all day while at work, come home and it's a pleasant 20c in my room. Will open the windows when it's cooler out than in :)

Exactly what I do Nick, Doors n windows shut, curtains closed on hot days.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall.
