Keeping cool in heat

If you don't have the benefit of air con, what do you do to keep cool indoors in hot weather?

Fans help but only if they're blowing on your skin, as they help to bring your body temp down by blowing cooler air onto it (assuming the temp of the room is cooler than your body temp, which it probably will be, in the UK at least). Fans also assist with sweat evaporation.

Ideal thing is a bowl of ice or a bottle of ice in front of a fan as it blows cooler air from the ice. Of course that'll melt quickly though!

Another good tip is to run the outside and inside of your wrists under cold water every so often.

I might be struggling working outside in that heat next week. Might have to wear a cap, and I hate headwear.

Something simple that you can do is keep curtains/blinds drawn and windows closed in the day, and then open the windows at night time. It seems instinctive to open all of the windows when it's boiling hot, but when the outside temperature is in the mid-high twenties or higher, all you are doing by opening the windows is letting warmer air in.

 

It might not seem like it would make much difference, but turning off electrical appliances that aren't necessary will also help. TV's playing in the background, lights on in the evenings, and laptops on standby will all make the room feel hotter than it needs to!
