Distant thunder round here now. Persistent light rain most of the afternoon, so wasn't expecting anything.

That's weird Gordon as I'm only down the road next to the A444 the rain came after the storm and it was loud rolling thunder

A sunny afternoon here since about 3. Makes up for the terrible convective set up. It's warm as well despite the on-shore breeze, 19.3°C.

odd indeed my parents who i am with at the moment didn't hear it either

I must admit I was surprised that there was no thunder considering  the strength of the rainfall

Lovely roasting afternoon here after warm muggy morning, now super duper rain and bits and bobs of thunder round about. Could do with a bit more lightning.

Blooming heck it must be tipping it down north of London.

Very dark and humid here in south Bucks, few spots of rain but nothing major yet.

Quite a few stations are recording between 15 and 20mm in 30 minutes, underneath those brighter echoes. Anybody under them?

Over 1400 strikes during last weeks poor plume, and 76 during today's showers.

And not one of them strikes have landed within 30 miles of me lol! The plume was overhyped as most things are now days, but to be honest i would just be happy to see a few flashes of lighting and some deep booms of thunder.

The plume was not overhyped...it was well modelled, but unfortunately in this instance, cloud cover detritus from overnight elevated convection inhibited surface based convection

Lovely large convective rain-droplets the rain is welcome - I've been inundated with thick cloud all day.

Just got home as the heavens have opened - saw two brilliantly bright lightning flashes on the M11/M25 (counts as a thunder day lol). Thunder even travelling along the M25 with the window down was an awesome peel :D

Skies look less thundery here although immensely humid and raining moderately heavy now.

(We were travelling south ahead of the thundery rain clump by the way for those not from this neck of the woods)

I think the zone of potential is slipping past me now which is a shame. I am expecting the area of downpours near me to pick up in activity as it slides by (doesn't it always!).

Still remarkably humid and still some cells to the west of London, but based on their trajectory think will miss me (still trying to test my camcorder!).

Well, the sky is darkening and I am expecting rain any time now. But, will it thunder?

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
