Hey I just had a thought... We name tropical storms and significant low pressure systems - so could we not (unofficially) name plumes?

We have enough of them (at least a couple of decent ones each year).

Could use and alphabetic convention or have some other system. Thought it might be worth the discussion.

Hmm this thread could struggle due to the combination of the UK's record with plume events and the websites swear filter.

Basically, choose a variation of a town/city name and put 'El' on the front.

I think its a good idea...would suggest A, B, C, D so we have a chronology and tally of plumes in any given year...so if this year we have El Woking we know its been an awesome year :D

This was my thinking entirely - it's all well and good using dates but would be nice to refer back to this year's events with a simple name.

So if it was to happen what would A be?

El Aldermaston (cos it might go off like a nuclear bomb? ;-) )

Surely all plumes since 2005 should be called Van something? They seem to like Holland and Belgium more than Britain...

El Vanishio :whistling:
