Just been through Telford Central and Wellington rail stations on a top-secret train trip to Wales and it looks like the Stratuscumulus Sunday cloud curse is affecting the area. But... there did seem to be one or two brighter breaks in the cloud when passing Telford. :o

To be fair, it was mostly cloudy in Solihull before I left, too, so it's not the only place getting invaded by the cloud monster. :p

North westerlies vs South westerlies.

Not too sure which one is better though...

NW = Mild, Breezy, Drizzly, Cloudy

SW = Warmer than NW, Windier than NW, Wetter than NW, Sunnier than NW

Well, looks like SW are coming soon.

It's interesting really. Have usually tended to believe that North-Westerlies brought brighter, showery, weather. But I think it depends where you are and whether it's via a proper Polar Maritime flow. South-Westerlies can produce the same scenario as well if it's resulted by the unstable Polar Maritime flow (especially helped by low 500mb thicknesses and low 850 hPa temperatures) with the best of the sunniest weather towards the South-East. I think also, the more unstable both the flows are, the more likely the emphasis would be on a sunshine and shower setup along with chances of thunder and hail - less chance, too, of convective clouds spreading out into large sheets of Stratuscumulus.

A North-Westerly flow via a Tropical Maritime setup with warm (upper) air spilling over the top of the Azores High into the flow could then result in mild, cloudy and wet North-Westerlies, probably especially if you're to the North-West of the region exposed to the Cheshire Gap.

Not really too much of an expert on this, but feel they are some aspects that can affect whether North-Westerlies and South-Westerlies are cloudy or not.

As for this morning (back in Solihull), seems to be a mixture of sumny spells with some sizeable patches of dark clouds around at the moment. Was the odd spot of very light rain. Reasonably mild, as well, with the temperature nearing 12*C, but thought it would have been a touch cooler than that.

depends where you are, NW'lys way worse here all times of the year, prefer SW'lys all year round to NW'lys

Dodged most of the showers today apart from heavy one mid morning, some decent sunny breaks from 4pm though grey again now (still more sun than the whole weekend though shock horror lol), still got that howling wind though really gusty, in fact it seems like it's been howling between 20-40mph for 6 months now hmmm

This week (hopefully) will be warmer and much sunnier from now onwards, except for tommorow morning at around only 9C. :cold:

The weekend will probably be wet and mild - pretty much definitely wet and cloudy (as per usual).

Next week may be (about 20% chance) hot, but I would not be surprised if it ends up being mild and cloudy. :bomb:

Back in Stourbridge now and a much better afternoon. No surprise the sun is out now that vile north west wind has vanished. It's lovely calm and warm this evening and will be having dinner and a few drinks outside tonight. Excellent. 22c high today. :)

Temperature has just about reached the magic 20*C mark and there's some good sunny spells around with just a few little cumulus clouds dotted about (...and the odd bit of that hazy stuff). This is definitely more like it.

Edit: the weather really does need to stop picking on certain places in the West Midlands, though.

Edit part 2: Started to speak too soon, seems to be clouding over more from the West. Should have known the Solihull Cloud Shield wouldn't remain strong for long (although, to be fair, it's not clouded over completely yet and the sun is still shining at times).
