REPORT
The most notable thing about April weather over Kilmersdon was the above average amount of sunshine through the month. We totaled an amazing 203 hours and a bit which equates to an average of just short of 7 hours a day which for a Spring month is pretty impressive. Only April in 2007 and 2011 came close to this figure making it the sunniest April of the millennium across the area. Of course as always there were cloudier days and the 2nd and 3rd saw no sun at all. However, there was a down side to all that sunshine and we paid for it in terms of night frosts which occurred frequently through the month as skies were often clear at night too. My lowest temperature of the month occurred just after 6am on the morning of the 27th when a minimum of -2.7C (27F) occurred here in the valley (potentially damaging for gardeners and growers who left tender plants outside being as it occurred so late in the month). Conversely strong Spring sunshine on many days compensated this with some very respectable afternoon temperatures and the warm settled spell from the middle of the month saw 20.8C reached on two consecutive days namely the 14th & 15th. Again keen gardeners will know that soil moisture deficits were quite high through April as rainfall was scarce and light when it did occur. Just a shade under 15mm fell through April which is just over half an inch and well below average for April. Coupled with low rainfall totals were some fresh drying winds on many days which enhanced the drying process of the soil. Temperatures for April on average were only a shade below the long term mean but this was offset by warmer than average days against some particularly cold nights especially down here in the valley. There were no particularly strong winds through the month with 27mph the highest gust I recorded on the afternoon of the 1st. There were no incidences of hail, sleet, snow, thunder or lightning through the month as the weather was too settled for such events for much of the month. So overall April 2015 was a very decent mid Spring month with plenty of dry and settled weather with more than average sunshine and rainfall less than average but with a higher than average incidence of night frosts.

My statistics for central Reading in April 2015:

Average maximum: 15.7
Average minimum: 5.7
Average for month: 10.7

Highest maximum: 23.7 (April 15)
Lowest maximum: 10.6 (4)
Highest minimum: 11.5 (25)
Lowest minimum: 1.6 (6)

Air frosts: 0

Thunder: none heard

Wintry precipitation: none observed

Rainfall: no data available for this site; Reading University recorded 15mm for the month, so a very dry month.

Sunshine: no data available for this site; Reading University recorded 226 hours for the month, which is 140% of average.

Overall a mild, very dry and sunny month. April 2015 got off to a cold and cloudy start, with the sun finally breaking through on Easter Monday and the temperatures rising accordingly. The middle of the month was generally warm and fine with some cool nights, and the month ended with a cooler spell with some daytime showers and night time ground frosts returning.

For my home area in Highland Perthshire a drier than average month with some warm daily maxima over 20C. However most notable were the cold nights with 15 air frosts plus another 8 ground frosts, two with air temps of 0.0C exactly and another sub 1C.

May started off similarly with a min of -3C and -7C on the grass. Milder nights forecast now though for the foreseeable.

April - Hobart, Tasmania

A very dry and cool mid-autumn month. It was the coolest April since 2006 and is now the second month in a row to be anomalously cool ( 1981-2010 ). This is the first double monthly cool spell since the start of 2011 - with most months since then being on the warm side. Hardly any rain fell this month, just 12mm, the driest April since 2002.

Average maximum:  16.7 ( -1.1 )

Average minimum:  8.9 ( -0.5 )

Rainfall:  12mm ( average 53mm )

Rain days ( +1mm ):  6/from 13

High pressure centred just to the west for most of the time saw a persistent cool southerly airflow. Often cloudy, the wind coming in almost directly onshore. Occasional weak fronts bringing just a shower and a follow up light shower or two. On the 19th a significant pool of cold air behind a front offered hope of a pre-season but brief wintry outbreak - but airmass was too dry to bring the promised mountain snowfall. However overnight temperatures plummeted -  giving many locations away from the coast a sub-zero temperature. For many places it was the coldest April night for many years.

Extremes in daily temperature for April ( Records since 1882 ):

Highest maximum:  25.2...1st ( Record 31.0 in 2014 )

Lowest maximum:  13.4...25th ( Record 7.7 in 1967 )

Highest minimum:  12.9...18th ( Record 18.6 in 1959 )

Lowest minimum:  3.4...20th ( Record 0.7 in 1888 )

A slightly warmer than average April, but due mostly to a high mean maximum. The mean minimum temperature was actually the lowest since 1990. The air frost on the 27th was the latest date to record one since May 1979. For so late in the month, it was the coldest April temperature since 2008. The month continued the pattern of every other April since 2007 being very dry. 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013 were all drier however. It was the second sunniest April on record, just missing out on 2011 by 2hrs. It was also the 5th consecutive month with above average sunshine.
