Funny to read comments of 'careless' and 'sloppy' when the aggressive style of play was called for on a number of occasions in the past when such positive match positions were wasted due to slow scori

in all the doom and gloom for the aussies, there is one glimmer of hope....             ...in the form of a promising young batsman who top scored for them.....goes by the name of Extras .....l

2013 last time both Cook and his partner both made hundreds. This was against New Zealand funnily enough. Another target to aim for. England new opening partnership at headlingly.

Progress a bit slow but knocking the runs off steadily. Should lose time tomorrow due to rain suspect a draw is the most likely outcome unless England collapse.

Why shouldn't England score 500+ and put pressure on NZ on day 5? Even with rain/showers likely there should still be at least half a day tomorrow and a day's worth over the final 2 days play.

I can't see us making 500 more likely match the NZ first score.

253 for five disappointing end of the day for England after a good start but too slow play.

This was the last time the England team did not have Cook in the Test side.

    Strauss

    Bell

    Shah

    Pietersen

    Collingwood

    Flintoff ©

    Jones (wk)

    Udal

    Hoggard

    Anderson

    Panesar

And that was against India in India in March 2006.

Surprised we're playing however the collapse continues and another wicket has gone. Going to be a very large first innings deficit again.

Yup normal collapse full under way. Over all shows we've still got a long way to go.

Another one another dismal performance by England after a good start.

Good rear guard action by the tail enders scores tied.

England all out for 350. Got out of jail there well done Broad and Wood and Anderson.

nz 338/6 at the close, and barring a miracle, they are already out of sight

Moeen Ali is not a test class spinner by a long way, england need to rethink their strategy on Moeen, IMO he's front line batsman who is a useful second spinner....Rashid needs to come in ASAP, if they don't play him, we'll never know how good (or not) he may be

    Sadly not.

Pretty well nailed on England defeat as they'll probably get some play tomorrow and all day Tuesday.

Poor tactics by England in their innings failing to press on when in command and a slow run rate meant New Zealand could always regain control very easily. Only a slog by the tail enders saved the first innings. In contrast New Zealand were positive all through and knocked our bowlers off line.

just to add their  tailenders plunder 88 off 10 overs, with Broad's 3 overs going for 42....disgraceful performance by a senior bowler, back to the laughing stock of cricket again...at least I wasn't sucked in by the lords false dawn  :nonono:

Believe me AJ, Rashid is not the answer to England's ills. He bowls just as many loose deliveries as Moeen, and is nowhere near as good a batsman. Rashid just about qualifies as a second spinner, but never as a sole choice.

England badly need Panesar to rediscover his mojo. Unfortunately, he doesn't even seem to be in Essex's first choice XI at the moment - same with Tredwell at Kent.

I don't believe you Bish....lol.....I've seen Rashid bowl on numerous occasions, he's a much better spinner than Ali, and a pretty close match with the bat!

The match turned when Ballance ran out Lyth.

Ballance and Bell have had a poor match, Bell has contributed zip this series, thus far. He has been very poor with bat and fielding.

That was a session of incredible bad bowling for England. Why didn't Cook pull them up and have a word - he can't bowl for them, but he can at least guide them and let them know of what he thinks of their bowling.

The more I see of Lyth, the more I like him. There are a few Yorkshire lads in the England team who know this pitch well,  so if we can see off the new ball then who knows what can happen.

It's amazing just how few deliveries would have even hit the stumps. We make it so easy for the opposition sometimes.

This very much looks like being the second consecutive Headingley test where England have totally lost the plot and thrown away some strong positions.
