Your top ten cold snowy marches that you can remember,a memorable shortlived cold snap makes the list

It doesn`t have to be top 10 it could be as little as you want your list.

1.2013.

2.1987.

3.2006.

3.1995.

5.2001.

6.1996.

7.2008.

8.2007.

9.1993.

10.2005.

Need to add 1979 and early 1986.

But 1979 there was a severe system,wish I could remember it but I can`t.

2013 here saw severe blizzards with drifts up to the bedroom windows.. 1979 was also one to remember.

I did and we did have snow here that March of 1989. Remember it well.

It was Monday afternoon of 20th March 1989. Rain came in the afternoon and evaporative cooling came into play. The rain turned to sleet then snow and accumulated. That evening I was making a snowman in the back garden during a wintry shower. There was an official snow cover and I recall wet snow flakes falling the next morning.

There were some sharp frosts in 1993.

The best day of the month with some drifting snow.

Maybe I was too harsh on 2004 it wasn`t bad really,it wasn`t worthy of the list here.

Best 2004 march day,the first few days were very cold after the cold snap from late feb, snowdrifts about too.

I will put it in the list.

http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/archive/ra/2004/Rrea00120040311.gif

This cold NW later in the month gave very little snow just a sprinkling.

March 1997 and 1991 was the only marches I recorded no snow,1991 had hail showers maybe soft hail.

30th anniversary today of a snowfall I remember well.

Friday 15th March 1985. Sleet and snow showers during the day and I remember at night peeping out of the curtain and see huge flakes of snow falling. The next morning woke up to a wintry scene with snow on ground and snow falling. By late morning, it was clearing up and the snow started to thaw in the March sunshine. It was a very sunny afternoon. I recall freezing fog the following morning.

Hard to believe it was 30 years ago tonight I looked out the window to see those huge flakes of snow falling in the streetlight.

1985 checking the archives that does look a very wintry month another should be higher up on the list,I can`t remember it,suppose I only remember the extreme snowfalls back then, and after the February snowy extreme everything march gave is an absolute memory loss.

In terms of how memorable the Marches were for snow, I'd say the following (most memorable at the top):

2001

2006

1995

2013

1998

2008

2007

1996

1998 might surprise some people, but in the Tyne and Wear area there were notable, if short-lived, snowfalls there early on the 1st and 6th of that month, both giving a few centimetres of cover.  2007 makes the list because of the cold snap on the 18th-20th in an otherwise mild month.  2001 makes the number one spot mainly because of the significant falls on the 2nd, the exceptionally cold night of the 2nd/3rd and the fact that in Cleadon, most of the snow cover survived on the 3rd and 4th despite near-continuous sunshine, and the cold snap around the 17th/18th was also quite memorable.

1st March 1993 had lying snow at Cleadon but it was a rather sleety slushy sort of day- I have vague recollections from that day of wading through the slush as well.  1996 doesn't get high on the list for me- we did get lying snow on the 12th, but I remember it more for its 15 consecutive sunless days from the 11th-25th than anything else!

Interesting list when you look at the top 4, or more specifically 2006, 1995 and 2013 which had rather memorable summers, especially July in the case of 2006 and 2013. 2001 was also quite a decent summer overall. The less said about 98, 08 and 07 the better though!

March 2004 and 2008 are not on that list because I remember the failures more than anything else. I suspect a few other NW members remember the March 2004 one. The snow was on the borders of the region, warnings given and it died out.

Did see some snow during March 2008 but we got rain that Easter Sunday morning whilst locations further east got snow and a cover.

The March 2004 one we were literally right on the edge of- it had been forecast to cover places further north but in the end it snowed most of the night down south, just clipped here around 8am giving 1cm of cover in time for the 0900 before quickly fizzling out. 20 miles north got nothing when they had been all but promised it.

Year 2008 was a total bust, no lying snow at all despite it falling in 6 different months. It was a really poor year with that and its dull summer.

For my area the list would be;

2013  A month worthy of many winters. 55cm accumulated snow, huge drifts, 5 ice days, 18 mornings with lying snow and 24 air frosts

1987 29cm of snow on the 6th, 23 air frosts and 14 mornings with lying snow

1962 As cold as 2013 but not as snowy

1996 Not as snowy as some on the list but unremittingly cold. Highest max' was 7.5c on the 6th

1979 A notable mid month blizzard with 22cm falling on the 16th

1995  30cm accumulated snow and 11 mornings with snow lying

2001 27cm accumulated snow and 11 mornings with lying snow

1970 A  cold and snowy first half offset by a less cold second half

1985 8 mornings with lying snow and an ice day on the 20th

1969 Persistently cold with frequent, mainly light, snowfall

1986 9 mornings with lying snow despite only 6cm falling all month. An ice day on the 1st.

My memory of Marches doesn't go back before the mid nineties so, looking at the 2000s:

2001: Snow showers on the 01st gave a light covering, more noticeably so on the Mendips. The best event of the month here though was the battleground snow on the 20th that left 10cm before a thaw started on the 21st.

2004: A little snow was left on the ground during the opening days after the heavy snowfall in late February. Then the battleground snow of the 11th/12th brought only 2.5cm before rain followed on.

2005: Mostly light snow gave a small covering of 2cm on the 02nd but that melted quickly in the sunshine on the 03rd.

2006: The northerly on the 01st brought 6cm lying at 09:00 with showers continuing throughout the day. I also encountered heavy snow showers in south Wales on the 04th. The 12th then brought a covering of 11cm which began thawing shortly after with very little left by the end of the day. This is perhaps the snowiest March I can remember clearly.

2007: The northerly on the 19th brought snow showers but left no accumulations due to insufficiently cold ground and too much sunshine.

2008: An almost negligible fall occurred early on the 04th with hints on the grass and cars, much more noticeably on the Mendips. 2cm fell overnight into the 23rd but melted quickly after.

2009: A very stormy entrance to March brought a similar hint of something early on the 04th with the Mendips covered in white.

2013: I sadly wasn't here to witness this month.

So 2006 takes first place for snow, probably followed by 2001. 2013 would certainly take first place for cold but snow was rather unimpressive in this neck of the woods despite the depth of cold.

Coming up to 20 years since this event. Impressive for so late in the season to get a snowy Atlantic breakdown.

It started snowing here in the early hours and we had an official snow cover. For an Atlantic system coming up against no block or stalling, so late in the season, pretty impressive.

2006 the snowiest by far followed by 2001. These two stick out a mile way ahead of anything else.

After that 2004 had good snow and hard frost at the start but nothing falling apart from sleet. 2010 had good snow inland at the start of the month but nothing on the coast but did have the latest date I can recall for a 10cm snowfall on the last day of the month.

2008 had a potent northerly at easter but at that time most of the snow melted during the day. Still managed a colder min than anything since January 2013 though.

2013 had a good snowfall lasting from the 10th to 13th but the rest of the month was awful.

The run of Marches from 2001 to 2008 were the snowiest since the 1960s in contrast to the 1990s which had very little. I struggle to recall any March snowfall in the 90s apart from 13th March 1996 and the beginning of March 1998. 1993 had a 20cm snowfall on 27th February but I don't recall much of it lasting into March.

The 2010s have been dire as well. It is looking increasingly likely that this will be the 4th March in 5 years with no lying snow which is more evidence of how this decade is turning out even worse for snowfall than the 90s. Up to 2010 we only had four snowless Marches in 15 years (1997, 1999, 2003 and 2009). I had 35 days of lying snow in March between 2001 and 2008 but have only recorded 10 days since 2009, all but one of which was in 2013.

Memories go back as far as 1987, and between 1997 and 2008 are based mainly on events in Tyne and Wear (with one or two exceptions..)

March 87 - a number of snowfalls early on and around the 18th.

March 92 - preety certain we had some snow on the 21st in an otherwise snowless month on the back of a snowless winter (reason why I remember it well..)

March 93 - seem to remember the first day brought a snow cover and we had a few showers.

March 95 - a very snowy start with numerous heavy snowfalls which gave good cover but thawed a little in the day. A late snowfall around the 27th brought an inch cover.

March 96 - plenty of snowdrifts were still around at the start after the major falls in early Feb. March 12th brought a classic battleground event - we did well seeing about 3 inches just on the right side of marginal and the cover stuck around a bit thanks to persistant cold conditions

March 98 - one or two light snowfalls early in the month in Newcastle.

March 01 - was in Stirling and we had a couple of snowfalls seem to remember.

March 04 - 4 days of snow cover early on even in coastal Sunderland, but don't recall much snowfall.

March 05 - a couple of snowfalls early on.

March 06 - cold start, another battleground snowfall on the 12th delivered a bit of snow in Tyne and Wear, in Windermere nearly a foot!

March 07 - 18th-20th snow showers.

March 08 - a snowy start to Easter Sunday here with an inch cover disappeared by lunchtime.

March 13 - exceptional persistant cold, and a couple of good snowfalls.

This March we saw some surprise wet snow on the 1st, and showers on the 2nd.

I suppose we can add March 2018 to the list now....three ice days and definately the most snow I have seen in March by far at my location in South East Ireland thanks to The Beast meeting Storm Emma with full snow cover from 27th Feb to 04th March and 50% cover until 7th with the larger drifts talking weeks to finally clear. Mini Beast brought another full covering of snow from afternoon of 17th (snow showers) and 18th (snowed all day) with gradual thaw in sunshine despite cold temperatures on the 19th March.  Wet snow fell again one night later in the month but didn't settle.

March 2013 would come next with a decent covering on 11th (ice day) and 12th and several other days this month had  snow falling and temporarily settling

March 2008 saw some decent coverings over a few consecutive nights from a northerly which tended to mostly melt in daylight hours.... March 1996 also saw a good battleground snowfall here but melted next day...... 1993 saw a covering of snow on 01st in an Easterly but turned sleety during the day and most of the snow had melted by evening......Can remember a few more wintry March days from the 80's and 90's  but usually 1 day or less affairs....

For here the best March for snowfall was late March 2013. It came just after the equinox and was possibly the first time since Feb 91 which included drifting. It thawed very slowly and there was still plenty of snow on the ground by my birthday (30th March) which was very special from a personal perspective and something I never imagined seeing prior to that.

March 2018 was a very close second though, but that was two separate events early and mid month and didn't last as long as 2013. Still very good for March though and again included strong winds and drifting.

The only other time I specifically remember snow in March was 2001, when we had a snowy day on the 21st. A fairly good event for the time of year, but didn't last long, been gone pretty much the next day I believe.

I've heard there was also possibly some snow here in March 1987, but I don't remember that one.

1987 Very cold (CET 4.1C) - the coldest since 1970, and there hasn't been a colder one since. It was extremely cold in the first half, as cold continental air covered the country. Heavy snow in central regions on the 6-7th. Drifts several feet deep reported in Staffs. There was another heavy snowfall on the 19th over the south: 30 cm on Salisbury Plain. There were some severe frosts. It became milder form the 22nd, as winds turned more towards the NW, but it was wet. It was very stormy on the 27th.

Thanks hillbilly, however it should be noted that March 2013 had a CET of 2.7c, making it the coldest since 1892 (also 2.7c). You have to go all the way back to 1883 (1.9c) to find one colder, in the CET zone at least.
