Gas Warfare

Recommended Posts

One hundred years ago on April 22, 1915 was the day when gas weapons were first used in WWI. They are still being used today in Syria and of course were used by Saddam in Iraq. Many books have been written on the subject. I have a couple. Between Genius and Genocide: The tragedy of Fritz Haber, father of chemical warfare by Daniel Charles and The Poisonous Cloud by his son L.F. Haber.

Meteorology played a key role in the deployment of the gas and I did post some thoughts on Meteorology at the Battle of Loos in the history thread.

Chemical and Engineering News has some unflinching articles written by Sarah Everts, on the subject. As the editor says, not to celebrate but to remember, for it is easier to repeat mistakes if they are forgotten.  There is no paywall.  The testimony of two eyewitnesses is available and enough.

Thanks to Eli Rabett for the heads up on this

Gas warfare by terrorists is a very real possibility.

But yes, no 'standard war' should use such a thing.
