Winter 1956-57 was largely mild with limited snowfalls. One of the wintriest spells came in mid February 1957 with a northerly flow bringing snow showers and a covering to many parts of the north. On the night of the 18th/19th tracked across the Midlands producing a snowfall but what was peculiar was that the city of Leicester received a foot of snow, the county generally with falls of 4 to 8 inches and parts of Nottinghamshire receiving several inches as well but other parts in the track only received a light covering.
