Latest BBC forecast is very unflattering. Next few days mainly dry, temps 5-6C. Nothing out of the ordinary for this time of year. So when exactly does this cold spell begin?

Snowed here in Ditchling , grass is White as is Ditchling Beacon very white! but hard surfaces are wet so must have rained before it snowed I suppose but at least it settled

Was just thinking exactly the same, highs around 4c for me (except tues), all the way through.  Seems the worst of both worlds to me - not cold enough, not mild enough, just eugh.

There is still a north easterly this week, but it feels increasingly like we are juicing a prune rather than a ripe orange.

Its pretty much all over.

 

Some snow today again- elevation key & even that hasnt been a full saviour.

 

This 'cold spell' thus far has produced mainly a westerly / North westerly vector in the flow, every single time the PPN has come through there has been enough of a mild layer of air within the column below the cloud to melt the snow- dewpoints rising to North of 0c & WBFL probably 200M

 

Its a key peice of guidence overlooked for the SE in this type of flow.

Anywhere below 50M may as well forget snow especially on the south side of the thames. NW sourced air & air around -5/-6c @ 850 with thicknesses close to 1295 DAM never delivers snow unless your in the snow prone areas of essex & hertforshire who are like that because of the elevation- which makes usually a 1 / 1.5c difference at the surface.

 

You could say that today ( well later ) its the first day of the cold spell with -8c air pushing in on a northerly, however its pretty much all over in 4 days in terms of convective potential - the NE flow as all but evaporated except for the extreme tip of Kent & East suffolk.

 

Post that, a 'chance' of a big upgrade later in the 168-216 arena from the North ( I mentioned in the model thread last night) - the type of cold I mean is seen on the ECM 192 chart but its to far east-

My expectation is that will end up further west- but we will see.

 

Cold & dry is mainly the them of the next 4 days- I would hazard a guess there will be 1 maybe 2 more troughs pushing across that may deliver a cover- or at least have a higher potential to give us a cover due to more favourable parameters.

 

So- a learning then for general piste of the SE-

 

-6c or above in a WNW flow doesnt work in the SE,

 

we need sub -7c & more like -8/-9c if you are going to see snow falling to sea level with any meaning to it- otherwise it will always be wet!

I'm certain we'll see a downgrade to the MetO warnings today, or at least to the wording which will further confine any significant showers to the Easternmost coasts only.

I'm at aprox 100 mtrs above sea level and Ditchling Beacon is 227 Mtrs Above Sea level so as Steve Murr said snow possible above 50mtrs explains this!

Wholeheartedly agree. All the potential washed away by marginality. At least with HP building for the end of the week, there might be some pleasant days of winter sunshine.

The temps have been a diss appointment but you only have to look at the weather where it's sourced from to see the problem. Reykjavik mostly this week 4-5 degrees and sleet. Until we lock on to a more NE flow we Are going to be hunting.
