Very boring March. Close to average temperatures for the fourth successive month and, like the previous three months, it was down to near average temperatures all the time instead of a mix of cold and warm spells like you would expect.

Only a few warmish days and nothing remotely cold at all really. Maxes of 6-11C almost every day. Coldest max just 5.5C which is the second highest in my record after 6.6C last year. Between 2006 and 2012 the highest coldest max I recorded in March was 4.6C in 2012.

Even less wintry than March 2014 with only a bit of sleet whereas last year there were snow and hail showers on the 23rd. The number of frosts was average, with seven in total, but most were slight. Not reached -5C in March since 2010 whereas only 2007 failed to between 2006 and 2010.

Very little spring-like weather either as most of the sunny days had a nagging cold wind continuing the theme from winter. Also little in the way of convection with rainfall finishing below average (65% of average).

Sunshine was slightly above average (109% of average) despite a dull easterly middle of the month. There was however a lack of completely sunny days as the highest daily total was only 9.7 hours which is the second lowest I have recorded after 8.0 hours in 2013. However 9.8 hours were recorded on 27th February 2013 so this total is the lowest total I have recorded for the sunniest day in the first quarter of the year.

All adds up to another extremely unmemorable month for me

trouble is, models underestimate the Atlantic, all year, I generally expect Atlantic air all year, and expect the models to downgrade settled spells/cold in winter

I get the feeling that unless sunshine, rainfall, wind, temperatures etc all break records in the same month it will never satisfy Aberdeen!

Don't like it... Move!

It wouldn't have been so bad down here, but even when the sun has been shining, there has always been a nagging, cold breeze.

I am appreciating the light in the evenings though. Glorious:)

The beeb are suggesting the high will bring in an east or south easterly flow after easter allowing it to brighten up after whats likely to be a fairly cloudy but mild easter once Friday is out the way

It's actually been quite nice here. Plenty of sunshine. Yesterday was the first cloudy, rainy day in nearly 2 weeks. We've clocked up 73 hours of sun over the past 12 days. An average of 6 hours a day.

Into next week - highs around 18C look possible here. I won't be complaining. It's pretty normal here not to reach 20C in April - can go either way really.

Time to get out on my bike to work and back. Still a morning chill to contend with but cycling back home should be a pleasure. The outdoors season is about to begin!!

The 10 day forecast for Darlington makes happy viewing about time temperatures were getting into the mid / high teens

On the odd day or two perhaps, but 10 days at those temperatures is highly unusual - more typical of late May. Bear in mind the average max is around 11-12C at the moment.

The met office symbol forecasts are obsessed with the cloud symbol. They constantly overestimate or make it seem like it will be cloudier than it is!

I've noticed this, and posted an example in the SW thread yesterday.

Tomorrow they are forecasting sunny and 17c here though, and have more sunshine on other days this coming week too now. Typically I am meant to be travelling to the cloudier SE tomorrow though.

It's better than the other way round, I suppose. I would much rather have a cloudy day forecasted and ending up with a sunny day, than a sunny day forecasted and ending up with dreary rubbish.

True. Just a bit frustrating. Doesn't give a very good impression for tourists though visiting places.

Agreed.  Looking at the satellite imagery for today it appears that a region of clearer air has moved southwards down the eastern flank of the high, leaving most central and northern parts of Britain with plenty of sunshine, although most of the southern third of the country has held onto cloudy skies.  Thus, southern areas are likely to brighten up significantly tomorrow.

(Btw, I've had a brief holiday up in North Yorkshire starting Friday, so I did see a fair amount of sun today.)

The next few weeks should see an explosion of spring growth. Temperatures on the mild side, some sunshine and rain thrown in for good measure. Throughout March it has been slow but should be picking up now.

Its nice to see the oranges and reds flooding northwards so early in the year. Temperatures next tuesday for western Europe wouldnt look out of place in July.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
