Regarding the strength of the precip...

The models are handling this really badly. The differences between the Euro4 from run to run is a nightmare but it generally shows it fairly light and patchy, the ECM has it going much further east and far more potent. I would expect it to pep up somewhat during the evening, but it's never going to become widespread properly heavy snow.

Any hope at all for NE England or is it going to be similar to the event on boxing day where it stays south?

The precip should have long cleared by then.

I believe i mis-read Knockers post to read it is not rather than is it not.....doh.Yes i agree.Have to slightly disagree regarding tonights snowfall as i believe it will be disruptive Ooop North or were you referring to more southern areas?

GFS suggests it will stay weak and just get broader for today before it strengths over the Midlands but that's not until about 9pm-midnight.

The front is pretty much where it's supposed to be at the moment, just hoping for a broader precipitation envelope.

This is upsetting. Yellow snow warning, yet only heavy and light rain is forecast?!

post-17472-0-89439400-1421771202_thumb.p

This may (but not definitely) be the ONLY chance of snow for the remainder of winter, as (according to models) the Atlantic will fire back up and shoot storms and rain our way. This is apparently because America will shift our Jet Stream south, bringing more storms and no chance of snow!  :girl_devil:

It looks a little sleety at the moment according to the radar. The only concern is that the forecast is for temperatures to rise slightly. Your area has a good chance of snow which accumulates though.  :cold:

The warning now expects the snow to turn to rain later, however mentions an amber warning may still be possible.

Been snowing here since 18.00 hrs and seen more gritters tonight than in the whole winter so far!!.Light snow but with the occasional moderate fall.Settling on the grass but struggling on the pavements and cars.Think it could well turn to rain within the next hour though and all be gone by morning.

Verry light snow flurry here and has now stopped. I hope this wad just the leading edge and there is better to come! At least I've seen more snow in the last hour than I did in the whole of last winter.

Had a light covering too, but nothing to excited about as nearly all gone. If it is going to snow then I'd rather have a good dumping. Boxing Day was far better as we had 4 inches in about 3 hours.

The met office have extended the cold weather alert by another 24 hours to 12:00 on Friday

There is a 90% probability of severe cold weather and icy conditions between 0900 on Wednesday and 1200 on Friday in parts of England. This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services. Please refer to the national Cold Weather Plan and your Trust's emergency plan for appropriate preventive action.

Large areas of England will continue to experience colder than average conditions this week, with overnight frosts. Some wintry precipitation is expected for some areas too, this falling during Wednesday, then a drier day is forecast for Thursday. Icy stretches will also be a hazard. Weather conditions will become milder later on Friday.

An update will be issued when the alert level changes in any region. Alerts are issued once a day by 0900 if required and are not subject to amendment in between standard issue times. Note that the details of the forecast weather are valid at the time of issue but may change over the period that an alert remains in force. These details will not be updated here unless the alert level also changes, the latest forecast details can be obtained at the following link:

I'm glad I didn't get my hopes up. My area got a total covering of an outstanding 0cm! :search:

I would not be surprised if no snow settles in the South of England for the rest of the winter. According to models, the weather will be boring for the next two weeks - mild, breezy and showery. :nea:

GFS (Mild, Not Windy & Showery)

post-17472-0-04932900-1421865959_thumb.gpost-17472-0-96305000-1421866064_thumb.g

The GFS signifies mild air is going to take over, constantly pushing in from the west. Could even be some positive double figured temperatures by next week.

The GFS signifies it won't be particularly windy, except for the very far north - which won't even be that windy.

The GFS signifies it will be showery everywhere.

High pressure will dominate the weather from Friday onwards, for a week (probably).
