Had 71 mph hours ago. I'm sat here thinking things have quietened down and it's still force 7 gusting to 55mph.

did you see the report of over 90mph from Upper Bradfield, probably about the time of your gust?

Something I saw one night at the Lerwick Observatory, one of the few occasions when they were forbidden to even try and launch the 2300 radio sonde, it also broke only one window, if I remember correctly in the main part of the observatory.

Why is the Isle Of Man reporting such low winds speeds?! Odd, 69mph gust at Leeming, looks pretty bad for the A1 atm - http://www.xcweather.co.uk/

In newton Aycliffe and it's definitely breezy, originally from the north coast of Antrim so this is making me quite homesick! Had to batten down the hatches earlier now I'm enjoying the storm. Just wondering if anyone knows how much stronger it could get?

Yeh looks strange. Also look mat the lack of wind east of wales and then the winds over Yorkshire southwards. Lee wind effect???

Definitely Lee wind effect hence the very strong gusts being recorded around your area.

solar wind ???.

Nope, the satellite dish on the side of the office is wobbling in the wind so it's not getting all the data!

Which means anything can happen from suddenly quieter to some extreme gusts.

I had better extremes when from 10 mph to 50 mph then back to 10 mph.

From Stornoway Events Facebook page

During the storm the flying roof from Captain Morris Macleod's garage at the top of Bakers Road, went up over a lamppost and hit another house, three doors along. Householder Kathleen Maclennan was alone in the house when the damage was done after 2.30am. She said: "It was very scary when the crash happened and the window broke. I was so relieved when the firemen turned up to see if I was alright. I was very pleased to see them." Report and pictures from Iain X Maciver.
