We've had over 24 hours of continuous snow, mainly heavy here in Huddersfield ... Had around 8" of snow on the ground today and it still keeps trying now!

Looking at the precipitation radar today it seems to have been very localised to us with areas only a few miles out having rain/sleet/snow mix and not accumulating.

Today's setup was very similar to March 2013 when we had 3 days of continuous snowfall and had well over a foot on the ground and drifting above cars! This event was also localised.

When we get snow we do get it here!

I commute to work on a motorbike and the journey home was a little frightening :S

You must be really high up. like the Glenshane Pass over here.

We only really get snow when there's proper cold, and we haven't had that in over 4 years now.

About 200m above sea level that is all we are.

It must be something to do with the pennines, the precipitation just appears to get stuck and circulate above us. If you check a rainfall radar you can see how it just stays around us all day.

I would be interested as to why it does this if anyone knows?

That's over 600ft asl which is pretty high and you're well inland, so no wonder you're in a wee snow pocket. Not that dissimilar from the geography of the Glenshane pass over here, and it alway's snows up there.

I'm pretty much at sea level here and only a mile or so from the coast so it's not really that conducive to snow unfortunately.

We do get snow events from time to time, but it has to be proper cold for that to happen and the last one was December 2010 which really is quite a long time, even for these parts.

Really, the only difference between this winter and 2013/14 is that it's been slightly colder and that's about it. Pretty much snowless and frost free.

Charts for the next two weeks are still pretty dire so I've no idea what Simon Keeling was on about yesterday. Clearly a case of getting into James Madden mode :(

Indeed, altitude and distance from the coast and the warming effects of the sea have made all the difference in this spell. When you consider an average temperature gradient of 0.6C per 100m in height, being on a 200m hill has a large effect. The dewpoint was generally around 1C during this spell in the precipitation we did get, so we could have done with 200m and a 1.2C drop in temperature (actually more as lapse rates were slightly higher than this)!

It has been a rather poor winter here aswell. So far with only one day of falling snow and none lying at 0900. Being a 'westerly' winter, it has however been extremely dry (only 9.2mm so far this month and 43.4mm in Dec) and very sunny (December was a record-breaker and January has already beaten the 1981-2010 average for the entire month).

We still wait for the first lying snow since March 2013. Its the longest run without a snow day at 0900 since Feb 1991 - Jan 1993 and we're not far off beating that. The lowest temp is also a rather disappointing -1.9C.

Winter Index to 21st Jan (out of 28 winters):

20. 1999/00: 30.7

21. 1987/88: 27.9

22. 2007/08: 20.7

23. 2014/15: 18.8

24. 2006/07: 17.8

25. 1997/98: 15.9

26. 1989/90: 9.3

27. 1988/89: 7.8

28. 2013/14: 5.6

It is certainly taking its place among other noted stinkers. Hopefully February will offer something more.

I think you in the east have been unlucky not to get snow this time,i guess with it being pockets of snow clouds and not a wide band someone is going to miss out, then again you do well off the north sea when we sometimes get little. We have been blessed with 2 spells of around a week of lying snow, one just after xmas and this now. What we have not had is cold temps, just one night at -3 deg in December being the coldest and several -1's or around 0. We normally always get a -5 or -6 in the most snowless of winters [except last year].

It's been an ok winter so far In my region in the home counties.

Plusses. So many gorgeous cold mornings and a few flakes.

Negatives.. no lying snow or proper snow events.

Still hopefull but a little disappointed so far considering some decent signals before hand. If only the world would spin the other way.

Notice the BBC noon forecast today were running with the cold theme from the middle of next week and the possibility of some snow, as Simon Keeling has been saying over the last few days.

Doesn't look as if it'll last too long but you never know.

Charts are even hinting at something of a northerly next weekend.

Seems to be firming up for something pretty cold and wintery from the second half of this week and even into the next.

Still, they said the same thing a couple of weeks ago.

On average, how much is added during a month in your winter weather scores?

With still a month to go, winter 2014/15 so far has certainly not been a damp squib on the cold and snow front, but its been far from notable in this regard as well, preety average overall compared to others in the last 40 years. If Feb ends up a cold one with further snow then it will rank as better than average cold and snowwise - but only a little above, similar to 2000/2001 in many respects.

It is likely the winter as a whole will be regarded as respectable for the northern half of the country whilst never being particularly notable, but far far better than last year.

I'd say this winter has been very average to ever so slightly milder than average so far. It's had milder and colder spells, it's had wetter and drier spells, and most places have even seen a bit of snow now, which is a vast improvement on last winter. I can't complain to be honest.

Let's see what February holds. Will it be a colder month or will it revert back to mild once the high-pressure moves in?

Quite an odd winter that by the looks of it. It's not often the jet is stronger in February than it is in December. In fact there are only a handful of Februaries I can remember with a strong jet akin to December at all.

It was probably a shock winter for youngsters at the time, I know I was surprised by it being young and naive. Interested in weather but not in past history. Winters 1976-77 to 1986-87 would have brought ideas of guarantee cold and some snow spells during winter for schoolkids of that time then this winter comes along and where is the snow and cold? It started of coldish early December 1987 but it was largely mild thereafter with limited cold and snow. Certainly a wake up call and the following two winters reinforced this.

Indeed. Perhaps the first winter to break the long run of snowy 80s winter months, broken well and truly by 88/89! Bar Feb 1991, there seems quite a gap between then and 1995 for prolonged wintry weather.

Another January goes by without a proper Scandi high and accompanying easterly. Last proper one was 1996, so next year it will be 20 years!

Winter 2013?

Mr data summed that up very nicely it was a shock winter after growing up to expect cold snowy winters every year from the east in particular.

That easterly didn`t even register to me at the time, now I`d welcome that no worries snow grains also dry and freezing hill fog I like.

The atlantic after that kept on and on and the worse looking charts shows barletts highs.

That great february 10th storm I`ve highlighted as that was a new thing to see at the time storm force winds and soft stinging hail showers but quite large hailstones which gave a covering into that quite strange.
