Execrable month that, as far as I’m concerned, is the worst November in recorded history. Wind almost constantly from the SE yet again delivering extremely low diurnal ranges and a lack of extremes. No high temperatures at all during the month with only November 2010 having a lower maximum since the start of the century. 11 minimum temperatures were above the long term average max of 8.3C.

Exceptionally dull, wet and miserable with no day managing 6 hours sun for the first time since 1995. The dullest of any month since December 2002 and the dullest November since 1997, rounding off the dullest Autumn since 1968.

The majority of the sunshine was recorded in the first third of the month with only 12.9 hours between the 11th and 30th. This vile period recorded a mean max of 9.7C and a mean min of 7.2C with nothing lower than 2.6C or higher than 11.5C.

The number of wet days was the highest for any month in my records since 2005 with October 2006 the only other month to record more than 20 wet days.

Mean Max: 9.7C (+1.4C)

Mean Min: 6.2C (+2.9C)

Highest Max: 12.7C (1st)

Lowest Max: 6.9C (26th)

Highest Min:  10.7C (14th)

Lowest Min: -0.1C (10th)

Air Frosts: 1

Rainfall: 119.8mm (147%)

Wettest day: 17.4mm (16th)

Rain days(>=0.2mm): 25

Wet days (>=1mm): 22

Sunshine: 41.6 hours (57%)

Sunniest Day: 5.9 hours (2nd)

Sunless days: 13

Rating: 0/10

November 2014 - Hobart, Tasmania - Third month of spring

This was the 12th month in a row warmer than average, concluding the warmest spring that has ever been recorded in Hobart ( records since 1882 ). Previous spring record was in 1982, which was 0.2C cooler. November anomalies ( below ) are 1981-2010 comparisons.

Average daily maximum:  19.4 ( +0.5 )

Average daily minimum:  10.3 ( +0.4 )

Rainfall:  35mm ( average 53mm )

Rain days (+1mm ):  7/from 15

A significant cold outbreak with sub-Antarctic air occured on the night of the 1st with 10mm of rain ( the wettest day of the month ) with low lying snow, settling near 400m on the Hobart hills by the morning. A further front on the 5th brought overnight snow near 1000m. After a quick warming period between the 6th-8th, a NW-SW airstream became established bringing changeable conditions, with regular weakening fronts and troughs bringing occasional bands of mostly light showers, with short-lived warmer and drier days inbetween. Significantly cloudy to near overcast and rather humid during the final days of November with the odd drizzle patch, in an onshore moderate easterly breeze.

Extremes in daily temperature for November ( Records since 1882 )

Highest maximum:  31.0...8th ( Record 36.8 in 1937 )

Lowest maximum:  12.6...2nd ( Record 8.4 in 1885 )

Highest minimum:  17.1...8th ( Record 19.9 in 1937 )

Lowest minimum:  3.7...2nd ( Record 0.3 in 1913 )

November 2014 and autumn 2014

Davis weather packed up 21st so no rainfall readings after this with rain on 6 days after this. No temperature readings 21-23 then ‘new’ readings from 24/25 using untested max/min  wireless thermometer.

November readings are therefore not complete although the autumn should not be too skewed due to the above.

November

Mean=7.7

Avge Max=10.2 Highest=16.7 on1st and lowest daytime=4.8 on 25th

Avge Min=5.1    Lowest overnight=0.0 on 24th and highest=10.9 on 14th

Rainfall for up to 21st=39.6mm (47.7mm) with highest 24 hour total on 7th with 9.2mm: 9 days with 1.0 or more and 15 with 0.2 or more

No snow, thunder, no air frost and 5 ground frosts

Autumn

Mean               12.1

Avge Max       15.4

Avge Min        8.3

This is about 0.5C above the 17/18 year average

My statistics for central Reading in November 2014:

Average maximum: 11.8
Average minimum: 6.7
Average for month: 9.3

Highest maximum: 16.8 (November 1)
Lowest maximum: 7.6 (25)
Highest minimum: 13.5 (1)
Lowest minimum: -0.7 (25)

Air frosts: 2

Rainfall: no data available for this site; local stations recorded around 80mm for the month, which is slightly above average.
Sunshine: no data available
Days with sleet or snow: 0

A generally mild and uneventful month with a typical autumnal mix.  The month started very mild after the exceptionally warm Halloween, but temperatures soon returned to close to normal.  The first air frost of the season arrived slightly later than usual, on November 24.  I don't have access to any local sunshine records, but November 2014 seemed on the whole to be duller than usual, with a particularly damp and dreary spell from November 20 to 28.
