very disappointing, woke this morning to picturesque scene, heavy fluffy snow, icy cold not a bit of breeze. its now wet and wild outside! and all the snow is gone!!

This sounds worrying.

Although it's just started heavy again here.

Snow and ice warning up for tonight

Issued at: 1142 on Sun 18 Jan 2015

Valid from: 1500 on Sun 18 Jan 2015

Valid to: 1000 on Mon 19 Jan 2015

Wintry showers will become more frequent across northeast Scotland on Sunday afternoon with a spell of more persistent sleet and snow likely to develop by Sunday evening, moving southwards across some other parts of eastern Scotland and then northeast England later in the night. Inland and above about 200 m this may lead to snow accumulations of 2-5 cm, with greater amounts at higher altitudes. Meanwhile, along the coast a mixture of rain and sleet looks more likely, and with road temperatures falling below freezing this will lead to some icy stretches on untreated surfaces. The public should be aware of the potential for difficult driving conditions and slippery surfaces

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A cold, unstable northerly flow covers the UK bringing frequent wintry showers to northeastern Britain. Later on Sunday and overnight into Monday a small area of low pressure will move southwards down the North Sea, producing a more persistent spell of rain, sleet and snow. On north-facing coasts the relatively warm sea will mean that rain or sleet is more likely than snow, and with road temperatures below freezing, this is likely to lead to ice formation. Inland and on high ground snow is more likely, although there is some uncertainty over how far inland the precipitation will reach. The warning will be kept under review and adjusted if and when necessary.

covers

Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, Northumberland, Redcar and Cleveland, South Tyneside, Stockton-on-Tees, Sunderland

Snowing again and much bigger flakes. Not marginal as shown on radar but probably wetter to lower elevations. The system out to the north sea seems to be creating more precipitation but too marginal for comfort.

Interesting day ahead hopefully and beyond.

Edit:really heavy snow now :)

The rather unpleasant drizzly spell is gone now and has been replaced with moderate snow and a fresh breeze, which indicates the start of the Northerly airflow.

Some big flakes in Thornaby but pretty light snow. Seems to be thawing more than it's laying.

yep I would agree with that but hopefully temps will peak shortly and will decrease again to put us back on the right side for this evening and overnight

Yes, light rain here and starting to melt snow quickly. Hope tonight is the key. Hoping that I am far enough inland for it to get the 2-5 predicted.

High humidity and dew point is rapidly melting the snow despite temperature close to freezing.

How annoying, I thought this would stick around at least a few days.

Back to square 1 and I have no chance of snow showers tonight.

Drat, drat and double drat.

Just had a heavy sleet/wet snow shower which petered out into sleety/drizzle.

Bloody marvellous cold spell this.

Is a worrying sign as the wettish precip will ice up widely. Nearly took a tumble friday night as the thin snow layer was covering some black ice and was not prepared. Not good as having back op in few weeks for prolapsed disc in any case, so stay safe all and try and wear your best gripping footwear if out.
