It's interesting this morning that more elevated locations have been windy and only been around freezing, but sheltered lower sites have been to -3 or thereabouts.

Car thermometer at 8:20am said -1c which is our coldest night of the winter so far here.

Very sunny and crisp out now.

Sounds promising for a white christmas for some of the region going off the latest met-office update. :)

"From Christmas Eve, cold, windy, and showery conditions are expected, the most frequent showers in the north and east, where they are expected to be wintry over higher ground."

Is there anybody there......lol

Still a chance for some showers coming in off the north sea on Christmas day if the ecm is right, although the uppers are very marginal.

The gfs has us cold and dry with a light northwesterly.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a light wintry flurry on Thursday to give an official white Christmas - hopefully we'll get a more significant northerly next week, although the ensembles are all over the place at the minute!

Wind is getting bad again as predicted, several gusts well over 40mph this afternoon.
No rain though, in fact the gamekeepers were even burning a few firebreak sections of heather this morning.
That is a 'late winter' smell and coupled with the strong drying wind it could almost be early March.

Car thermometer currently says 15c which for mid to late December is quite remarkable.

Some quite gusty winds as well to boot.

No sign of any notable wintriness in the forecast, so it would appear that December will pass without any newsworthy snowfall here in Tyne and Wear. Anyone hoping for a white Xmas is going to be rather disappointed I feel.

I do find it quite strange though that the models are so messy, and have been so for some considerable time now.

Countryfile forecast did just say chance of snow showers on the 25th down the NE coast, and quite a severe frost into Boxing Day.

Yes it seems that we could get a snow shower on the big day apparently.

We'll see.

The models are changing so rapidly, can't see us in the NE seeing any snow in the near future!

At least tomorrow should be a much better day when we will finally get rid of this rain/drizzle/murk.

Yes, this afternoon especially has been really awful.

Actually, rain/drizzle (but mainly heavy drizzle) is my least favourite weather type. You still get soaked in it, would much rather it lashed it down than pathetic drizzly rubbish!

Mmm I would have to disagree, strong chance of back edge snow on 27th into 28th, this region firmly under cold enough air for snow down to quite low levels - this is what this evening's forecasts are showing.

Let's hope that remains the case when the time comes!

The 18z GFS also gives us some front edge snow as the front moves in on Boxing Day - something to keep an eye on for County Durham & Northumberland especially as a few recent model runs have shown this.

Friday night until Sunday morning could be very snowy for our region if the precipitation curls back around the low on the NE wind as shown on the GFS.

Clearer and sunnier today.

Thank the Lord for that!

BBC has us down for 1 hour of snow on Saturday night around 00:00.

Can't really get too excited about that, particularly as it turns back to heavy rain at 01:00!!

No they haven't, it's been updated this morning and it now covers the more southern areas of this region including Newcastle, Darlington and Middlesbrough. It still covers Northumbria as well

Looks like the snow will be just to the south of our region if that happens you couldn't make it up!

It's all well and good issuing a weather warning for snow in Newcastle, but as the system is approaching from the west I would say we have less than 10% chance of actually seeing settling snow.

We'll see I guess.
