Looks like many places will see some snow cover early Friday ad it may well last most of the day.

I would of thought the higher parts of the Moors will have good covering by tomorrow Colin. Am currently keeping an eye on your weather station to see if the snow line starts to drop. Currently sat at 1130ft although Im not sure how accurate it is.

Met Office 6am snapshot seems like something very possible looking at air profiles; wouldn't be surprised if the majority of the morning consisted of this for much of the region.

Latest GFS (albeit the 18z) is showing the precipitation a lot further north early on Friday, looking more like the Met Office warning area

Inland would receive quite a lot of snow from this if it's modelled correctly, great opportunity at lower levels also

Updated warning for tonight

Issued at: 1129 on Thu 11 Dec 2014

Valid from: 0010 on Fri 12 Dec 2014

Valid to: 1000 on Fri 12 Dec 2014

A weather system will cross to the south of the warning area early on Friday. This will bring rain to many areas but snow is likely over some of the higher ground, such as the Pennines. Even at lower levels there is a risk that rain may turn to snow before it clears eastwards - but this not happening everywhere. The snow could be heavy on hills, giving 5 cm or so, but on lower ground temporary accumulations of up to 2 cm seem more likely. Following clearance at the end of the night, there is an increasing risk of ice forming on untreated surfaces. The public should be aware of the potential for hazardous driving conditions. This is a further update to the warning first issued on Tuesday, edging the risk area south again and slightly reducing the expected amounts and impacts.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

An area of low pressure, currently running across the Atlantic, will cross central parts of England and Wales early on Friday. On its northern flank, cold air may be drawn into the circulation of the system, with a band of rain possibly turning to snow, even to low levels briefly. As this moves away, clearing skies pose a risk of icy conditions in places during the morning peak travel period. This is a complex development and details may yet change. Therefore this alert remains subject to further refinement through the course of Thursday and Thursday night.

Areas under the warning

Darlington, Durham, Stockton-on-Tees, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland, Sunderland, Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, South Tyneside

Unless the ground dry's rapidly I can't see anything lying by tomorrow morning away from high ground like the NY moors the last time I actually had snow lying on the ground was way back in March 2013 (20 full months whether December can save it from becoming 21 remains to be seen)

For Boro Snow when you log on: I noticed you have Darlo at 63m 206ft in your profile where did you get that from? as the met office have us at 50m 164ft
