Hard to tell with the blurred image but it looks like the sea walls are breaching.

There appear to be a few trees missing on the live stream. Gaps now along the row near the top of the screen and the right end of the row closer to us.

Definitely lost some palms. I'm surprised that boat hasn't gone anywhere.

Looks way worse than when Sandy hit the mainland.

No doubt but by the NHC's own admission Sandy was already extra-tropical.

I don't know if i am right Lauren but this is still out to sea,so still picking up warm moisture from it,sandy hit mainland then died, although it did caused lots of damage in it's path.

My thinking was that how much damage Sandy did and it was less strong than Gonzalo. Or as Sandy so destructive simply because of where it hit?

Sandy actually peaked hitting Cuba as a category 3 (the same strength as Gonzalo now actually), by the time it hit the mainland it was extra-tropical and just a severe barlonic storm infused with extra moisture.

Yes, much like Irene (no stronger than the outer bands of Gonzalo now), it was essentially down to location. You get a normal October thermal gradient forcing the system extra-tropical and then add a but load of tropical moisture.

For those arriving to this page..
