I'll take that and a few of those -24's!  :good: Just don't want to get too excited too soon, but if it is still showing with only a 48/24 hours to go then we could be looking at an insane start to Winter   :cold:

Oh yes, just for a bit of fun, imagine -24c over a relatively warm sea though - absolute carnage!

Yes the cliffs of Dover would certainly be living up to their colour description, there wouldn't be any bluebirds though, they would all be hibernating.

So basically low sunspot activity may have played a big part in the freeze of 2010, but there's other factors that could cause such cold outbreaks? Something like December 2010 is possible even in years with high solar activity?

There are some very significant cold and snowy blasts now almost a certainly in December.

Expecting something similar to 2010 and 2011 with major snow events and sustained extreme cold expected through the month.

“Major disruption at airports and on the country’s transport systems is inevitable and they should be prepared for this.

“We have the jet stream to thank for this which, due to solar activity, is meandering.

“It is about  to open the doors to a blast of cold air from the north and will block milder conditions from the west.

“It will be mostly cold and snowy until just before Christmas and there are signs of some more extreme conditions after December, although there are huge variables on these models.â€

Might be tempted to hang this outside when ever we're in the mood for the white stuff and hope it gives results...

Met office now hinting at it become colder away from the far north west

2nd to 11th dec

Cloud and patchy rain in southeast will clear during Tuesday with brighter, colder conditions following from the northwest. Showers will affect northwestern parts where it will be windy with snow over the hills. Frost and fog patches overnight. Thereafter, pressure will build from the west bringing a period of largely settled weather with variable cloud and sunny spells with the risk of frost and fog patches forming by night. However, northwestern parts will be windier with occasional rain, which may extend further southeast as a weakening feature around Thursday. Temperatures often below average and rather cold at times, especially where fog lingers, but somewhat milder in the far northwest.

Nothing spectacular yet. The pattern for the next week or so looks a little messy but a tendency to see mid-latitude blocking affecting our weather with the milder/cooler weather you would expect to see in this set up.

The polar vortex at the tropospheric level looks very ropey by week 2, with areas circulating the now present Arctic high. This coupled by frequent probing from the mid-latitudes is sometimes a tell-tale sign that cold could be around the corner. I wonder how long it will be until we see a critical hit.

it will be fun watching the models the next few weeks anyways CS, lets hope your thoughts come true. Coupled with the netweather winter forecast you could be right :D

P.S. Is there anything the site can do against the Express? Seen on twitter and FB how they have already twisted it. Thats truly awful. Id be so angry if it was me, its got to stop!

Some early signs of heights trying to build in to Greenland within the end of the 0z run on the GFS Para:

npsh500.png

Interestingly the 'older' GFS keeps the heights further south on the same frame. I wonder if the Para GFS will stick with this and try and build heights in to the artic region much earlier than the GFS over the next couple of weeks

The sooner we get a change in wind direction the better not had any sunshine since Monday

:lazy:

50 shades of grey!

Hopefully there should be some sunny spells over the weekend

Met office having none of it - http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/uk-weather-an-arctic-freeze-snowstorms-the-most-severe-winter-in-years-probably-not-says-met-office-after-cold-weather-warnings-9890202.html

Met office seem rather mild biased these days. Must be trying to kid people on that global warming actually exists.
