I've seen reports that the lava bursts are about 100M high (so just over 300 feet). So, much higher than a house.

I am quite interested on how high the smoke/ash gets and based on what I can see the smoke must get up to 1,000 metres high. If it wasn't so windy it would be higher.

amazing stuff also petrified at how bad it could develop.

Any thought NOTAM flyzone in iceland saw BA flight on flight radar go through black retangled area when this was kicking off.

Anybody noticed how many earthquakes in europe linked ?

Look where the rest of the fissure swarm is headed  That area has had the same thing happen before like this mornings fissure , it has flowed before, H............ long Icelandic name  By the way I thought

Herðubreið was out gassing slightly and making clouds stay around its top yesterday.

Too early to compare to Laki fissure eruption of 1783. For comparisons the lava fountains reached 800m to 1400 metres in the initial stages of eruption. That being said it lasted 8 months lava fountains for 5 months of the 8. Bardarbunga live cams are showing lava flow to the west of the fissure approx 3 miles distance as seen on BBC footage.

USGS shows a magnitude

5.1

111km SSE of Akureyri, Iceland

2014-08-31 13:01:47 UTC+01:007.5 km

More magma on the way? How long does it take to travel 7.5 km upwards

In his latest update, Jon Freeman says that based on the earthquake activity, there is a high risk for an eruption at Bardarbunga volcano!

It is worth pointing out that he wrote this before the M4.9 happened.

What happens if there is an eruption? My daughter is due to fly to New York on Wednesday for a weeks holiday. Will it effect her flight if it happens?

You would need a Northerly wind flow from Iceland which I don't think is likely for at least the next four to five days, if at all as we're under High Pressure central for a week or so. Best watch this space for the return flight, however.

Couple of official charts and maps. No un-checked data there all checked.

Yet another hard to pronounce Icelandic eruption name.

On the Mila 2 there is lights from a 4X4 again this time we can tell the difference between vehicles and fissure eruptions :nonono: Fissure still erupting File 3.

How the earth works on the discovery channel has just finished - topic was the Icelandic volcanoes and how they may disrupt air travel.  Mainly covered Katla as the threat and also the historic fissure eruptions, no mention of baroarbunga.  Shows how this volcano has crept up on the rails while everyone was concerned about katla, grimsvotn, hekla and askja.

Some fine weather fun over there just now too, dual low on the latest surface chart and another three piling up behind them ! Close inspection sees the main low of the pair have a neat little circle of 528dam at it's heart.  Thoughts of winter.... Fire and Ice indeed.

The 4X4's are arriving on the Bada 2 cam. Plus latest fissure quakes.

Fissure looks great as its getting dark. Don't for get to try the new 3D quake map http://baering.github.io/earthquakes/visualization.html or the original, http://baering.github.io/ Just click and drag the plot as needed.

The amount of SO2 is considerable one ton of SO2 to one m3 of this high SO2 lava has been mooted by the well informed  this evening.   Fig 5 Mila showes Gas no smoke and very little steam.

Volcanoes do not give off smoke never have. Oh god I have gotten different type face  :nonono:

Carl says 1000 tons of SO2 per second. :shok:  8)

A Hawaiian eruption with the same thin lava covering up to 3 KM at the moment... Fi6 the lava run off is becoming noticeable in the darker view.

Indeed! Iceland has it all!

The weather will calm down there over the next couple of days  which will be great for observing what's happening.

The 4X4's are arriving on the Bada 2 cam. Plus latest fissure quakes.

On the you tube feed there appeared to be at least 5 lights at one stage so I guess there are a fair few teams out there. Are they on the southern slope of Askja or a bit further south than that? Someone asked if they were EQ lights, which is not actually that silly a question if you are unaware of the teams driving around in 4x4's.

BBC vid gives an idea of the fissure size http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-29003031

Edit - it also gives an idea of just how strong the winds are at the mo.
