I am still trying to understand what is happening here but there does seem to be a little confusing information going on. Before I express any thoughts, understand that I am not a volcanologist and th

Did you see the beautiful picture with the eruption glow and northern lights giving surreal lighting effects.   The eruption seen from Jökulsarlón south of Vatnajökull glacier.  (Martin Schultz,

This is my favourite (from elsewhere) to date - very atmospheric.

The GPS seems to be out of action again since 6pm yesterday.Fissure activity ceased now too,but still seismic activity going on around the Bardadunga region.

Caldara rising!!!

Volcanologist: Bárðarbunga Caldera Starts Rising Again By Eygló Svala Arnarsdóttir March 10, 2015 08:30

Updated: March 10, 2015 08:31

Volcanologist Haraldur Sigurðsson, who predicted the end of the Holuhraun eruption with remarkable accuracy, wrote on his blog yesterday that there are indications that the caldera of Bárðarbunga volcano, which fed the Holuhraun eruption, has begun rising again.

The rising of the caldera could mean that magma is accumulating in the magma chamber, building pressure, which might eventually lead to another eruption.

“When the subsidence [of the caldera] stopped, the curve of the position of the GPS sensor in Bárðarbunga had become horizontal. In the accompanying graph from the Icelandic Met Office’s website a blue curve shows none or insignificant horizontal movement on the surface of Bárðarbunga from February 7 to March 7,†Haraldur writes.

“I added a red line for comparison [see Haraldur’s blog]. It clearly shows that in the past days, the GPS sensor has started rising again. It can be caused by two things: (A) The ice below the sensor is flowing into the depression … (B) The caldera has started rising again because magma from the mantle is flowing into the magma chamber below Bárðarbunga.â€

“I’m inclined to believe the latter explanation, but time will tell. If (B) is correct, it is likely that the flow of magma from the depths into the magma chamber will take many years before it reaches the position which Bárðarbunga had before the eruption which began in 2014,†Haraldur concluded.

Other scientists have predicted that Bárðarbunga will erupt again in the near future and that the eruption in Holuhraun was the first in a series.

The eruption carried on while the caldera subsided and magma flowed out of the magma chamber and into the intrusive dike connecting Bárðarbunga, which lies under Vatnajökull glacier, with Holuhraun north of the glacier.

Using data from a GPS sensor in the caldera, Haraldur and his grandson Gabríel Sölvi calculated the rate of the subsidence and when it would stop, which would mean that magma had stopped flowing into the intrusive dike and hence that the eruption had ended.

They had predicted that this would happen on March 4, while the eruption ended on February 27—they were off by five days.

It's been a while since any post's have been made in here,so what has been happening recently

there has been some earthquake swarms in and around Bardarbunga of late, notabley NW of Askja and a few in Hularuan

http://baering.github.io/

latest info here

http://icelanderuptions.com/#top

now what has just cought my eye(which is why i am posting now)is that there seems to be some activity close to Hularuan(ex fissure),check middle right of the cam here

http://www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/bardarbunga

it may be nothing or it may be a dust storm,i will be monitoring this closely over the days.

sadly the gps is still down and has been for some time.

i just needed to edit this post because i think this cam is zoomed out more than it used to be,here is what i mean,i have circled i think is Askja in black and the activity in red, this tell me that IF activity is in that red circle then that is NW of Askja,i could be completely wrong here and i will have to trawl though the beginning of the pages to see if i can find a match, found it

here is a snap shot from now

post-16960-0-13051900-1434907951_thumb.p

and from page 13 post 254

https://forum.netweather.tv/topic/81229-b%C3%A1r%C3%B0arbunga-and-askja-volcanic-activity/page-13

Edit:nope that is not Askja,Askja is due west of the cam :fool:

The steam is caused by rain/flood water on the old lava field which is still hot in places. There is still the chance that there could be another eruption.

Yes Snowdog, you could be right,i did stress may be. :D

I'm nowhere near an expert on volcanoes but from what i can remember from one of my uni modules the injection of magma into the surrounding rock induces earthquakes through changes in pressure. Increased seismic activity is one of the main forecasting tools for predicting volcanic eruptions. Lots of volcanic activity, with increasing strength, is generally indicative that an eruption is likely to take place. As this volcano is sublglacial a large eruption is likely to inject a lot of ash into the atmosphere (e.g. like the 2010 eruption).

Short lived earthquake swarm at Vatnajökull  http://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/earthquakes/vatnajokull/  and http://baering.github.io/

Jon Frimann's take on it is that it is a short lived dyke intrusion. http://www.jonfr.com/volcano/?p=5935
