I think these may be wind related, the low from greenland is crossing swiftly now and the windspeeds are already affecting the camera stability.

Hi Matty

the cam 2  always shakes in the wind due to the magnification of it(don't know the x times zoom) ,and is 20 km away from that cam, just lately there hasn't been these fountains in that area i touched upon earlier.

:Edit they are starting again in the immediate foreground of the cone

(in front of fissure).

it may well be air pockes trapped under the flow of lava in that area that explode, just a possibility.

the vog of war is inpending our view somewhat now lol.

cam 1 still vis ,just.

Edit no vis at all :sorry:

Just about a mag 5 at around 18:00 UK

LOL just look what the storm is doing to the strain meter here...post-4726-0-65851300-1418151681_thumb.jp

This is why it is hard to detect EQ's in a storm, the storm shakes the place to bits and batters it with very high long period waves, great for weather enthusiasts and storm watchers, bad for EQ recording, arr well can't have everything.

Holuhraun Eruption 100-Days-Old By Alëx Elliott December 09, 2014 12:45 Updated: December 09, 2014 13:26

Today marks 100 days since the ongoing volcanic eruption in the Icelandic highlands began.

A meeting yesterday between scientists from the Icelandic Met Office and the Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland, along with representatives from the Icelandic Civil Protection, the Environmental Agency of Iceland and the Directorate of Health concluded that there have been insignificant changes at the eruption site in recent weeks, but that seismic activity remains strong.

Scientists currently believe the eruption will probably continue until the subsistence at Bárðarbunga ceases—meaning the eruption could continue for several more months.

So far the eruption has caused the biggest lava flow for centuries and the dispersal of poisonous gas on the wind around Iceland. However, there has been no ash and no disruption to flights. The gas pollution today (Tuesday) is to the north and northeast of the volcano.

Though most likely, there are also other possible scenarios: “The volcanic fissure may lengthen southwards under Dyngjujökull, resulting in a jokulhlaup (glacial flood) and an ash-producing eruption,†a statement from the scientists says. “It is also possible that eruptive fissures could develop in another location under the glacier. If such an eruption would be prolonged it could eventually produce a lava flow.â€

A volcanic eruption in the Bárðarbunga caldera is also still a possibility. “Such an eruption would melt large quantities of ice, leading to a major jokulhlaup, accompanied by ash fall. Other scenarios cannot be excluded.â€

After a few fairly quiet days we see a big uptick in quakes since midnight.

Most fairly deep but the odd shallow one

Just been on a trip that included a tour round the lava fields of the Timanfaya National Park, Lanzarote . Spectacular and very interesting. Just a pity you could not walk round it and it was not active.

It seems the past activity there is very similar to what has been going on in Iceland over recent months.

Makes me interested in going to Iceland. Anyone aware of reasonably priced tours from UK that gives you good guidance about what is going on there?

I've also done the Timalfaya tour and the scenery was amazing! It finished with wine tasting which was a bonus.

Regarding Iceland, this article has some handy info: http://edition.cnn.com/2014/12/09/travel/iceland-volcano-safari/

There has been a 5.4 first big quake for days.   post-4726-0-76478200-1418650862_thumb.jp Looks like the eruption down at the fissure is still going strong, not as fast as in September but still covering lots of land, 80 square kilometers up to now, that is a fair bit of lava, around 1.5 km cubed...

Interesting read here http://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/articles/nr/2947#historic which shows how small it its compared to Laki and earlier eruptions. More info here http://en.vedur.is/media/jar/bb100days_ens.pdf which probably explains why we aren't seeing similar effects to the Laki eruption.

Looks like Laki was around 10 times stronger in output over 100 days. I bet we would be feeling it now if we were back in time to the Laki eruption, the haze would be all over and everybody would be coughing like smokers on 20 a day.

Looks like our fissure eruption could go on for months yet, the eruption may develop further elsewhere too, or not we will see.

I wonder where we will be at in the Spring, 150km square?

Cam 1 looks very nice at the moment with the glow increasing as it gets dark and blowing snow like steam in the foreground

http://www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/bardarbunga

I like leaving this on in the background when I am going about my business, when possible...post-4726-0-46171100-1418834531_thumb.jp I occasionally swap between the two.

I agree it looks nice at the moment, in fact I think it has got better looking since winter arrived, its not just the low light I think its the snow and cold also having their effects on the visuals.

Looks bright as hell on the mobile Right hand cam

After a quiet spell it seems bigger quakes are back on the menu. A 5.3 today and it seems activity has picked up although this maybe due to easier detection due to lack of strong winds.

I'm guessing the bright glows in the foreground is lava on the move most likely from the main source . The lava is comparatively hot . An amazing eruption continues .. thanks everyone for keeping us so well informed
