The 5.4 last night may be significant, it may herald a change in the eruption, this could well be a sign of the end of the fissure. Equally the end of the fissure could lead to fresh activity.

I knew straight away last night that after a long pause in 5+ mag quakes a big one was coming, been watching Bada too long.

Nobody knows what will happen next, we all know the worst case scenario, so the Average scenario is perhaps a wise precaution here.  That would mean an eruption of material somewhere else rather than a stop RE- activity.

Reason is that this is a regional fissure eruption and it takes years to show its full colors. Patience is a virtue in the study of Iceland's Volcanoes...I don't have patience half the time but I am young to the subject.

A graph that looks like an arid desert of activity is worthy of caution and generations of respect, especially in Iceland....

Careful tread lightly Bada sleeps for a while  post-4726-0-53347600-1415998654_thumb.jp

Snooze, sleep still alive though if one of those little lines was under my house it would fall to bits in short order, Bada is resting only. post-4726-0-32249200-1415999543_thumb.jp

LOL every time I look at mila its snowing they are elusive.

As we are familiar with  drum plots now thought the Molucca sea EQ Mag 7.1 (up to now) would make a useful comparison  post-4726-0-65405300-1416051645_thumb.jp sort of makes Badas shaking look like a mere rumble  :nonono:

The fissure eruption at H is back to fountain mode I think, people on VC have posted screen shots that appear to show such.

Looks like the magma feed from the hot spot has pushed some more.....

Updated information 16 November 2014 12:00 - from geoscientist on duty

The largest earthquake since the last report occurred at 01:37 this morning at the northern rim of the Bárðarbunga caldera and was 5.3 in magnitude. Since yesterday morning, 7 quakes over M4 have been detected at Bárðarbunga and all in all about 65 earthquakes in that area. At the northern end of the intrusion 8 or so quakes have been detected, all less than 1.5 in magnitude.

Extent of the lava

Yfirlitskort_20141114.jpg This map shows the extent of the lava 14 November 2014 and is based on radar images from the Icelandic Coast Guard. In addition, progressive changes of the lava margin during last week are shown. That information is based on field observations, various satellite images and older radar images from the ICG. The lava now covers 71.9 km² (71.5 km² + 0.4 km²). Enlarge. Institute of Earth Sciences.

Finally I have seen the fissure eruption again, at last   post-4726-0-21638000-1416169094_thumb.jppost-4726-0-77510800-1416169106_thumb.jp  Cam one is panning about for once, cam 2 is at full zoom, not worth looking at at the moment. The low cloud is steam from the lava field...

Now I can see the fissure properly at last post-4726-0-24561300-1416175456_thumb.jp

17 November 2014 10:00 - from geoscientist on duty

Seismic activity around Bárðarbunga and in the dyke intrusion, as well as volcanic activity at the eruption site in Holuhraun, has remained at stable levels since the last report at noon yesterday.

The strongest earthquake at Bárðarbunga was M4.8 yesterday evening at 22:27 on the southern caldera rim. Additionally, 7 events exceeded M4 and 11 were in the range M3.0-3.9. All in all around 90 events have been detected in that area.

In the dyke intrusion, none of the around 25 detected earthquakes exceeded M1.6 and most of them were located in the northern part of the intrusion. Activity in the dyke slightly increased in rate and magnitude yesterday following the M5.4 event at 01:37 (16 Nov., see last report) on the northen caldera rim. Similar observations have been made for several previous M>5 earthquakes, seismicity often increases slightly in the intrusion for several hours following larger caldera events.

Activity around Herðubreið and Tungnafellsjökull was comparably low. The eruption was well visible on cameras throughout yesterday. It continues with comparable force as in recent days. No changes are visible or reported from the field.

Dropping like a stone on the vertical displacement as I type

The depression that the GPS is sat in has gone deeper slower on the graph on average because it is roughly conical so as it gets bigger it slows down even though the amount of magma draining away remains out-flowing at the same rate, outside of the depression is now a much larger circle. The fissure lava flow is much the same , it is now that big 70+km that it grows hardly noticed now.

The GPS dropping like a stone is normal as it is corrected before long automatically by IMO algorithm. The gray lines are corrected out blue lines etc... :hi:
