The IMO's take on things http://en.vedur.is/about-imo/news/on-the-bardarbunga-earthquakes

I have seen various musings on some of the volcanic orientated blogs and one idea of the next eruption being in the fissure swarm to the SW certainly caught my attention.

Looking more and more likely that oraefajokull could be the next cab of the rank so to speak.

 http://en.vedur.is/about-imo/news/a-new-ice-cauldron-in-oraefajokull-volcano

It is Iceland however so it is a target rich environment.

A magnitude 3.1 earthquake occurred yesterday under the northern caldera of the volcano. Its very shallow depth (given as 100 m) suggests that it is most likely caused by adjustments of the glacier and not by a magma intrusion.
However, seismic activity at the volcano remains above background and it is being monitored by the Icelandic Met Office (IMO). There are currently no signs that activity is increasing towards new volcanic activity in a near future.

In December, IMO announced the that "real-time surveillance around Öræfajökull has been improved to better monitor the seismicity (significantly increased since September this year) and the release of geothermal water from the caldera (detected the first time in mid-November).
"... Most of the seismicity is located close to the caldera and at a depth between 2-10 km (the depth has a fairly large uncertainty).
Recent hydrological and geochemical measurements suggest a smaller proportion of geothermal water to be released in Kvía river which seems to have reached its maximum in December.
"Estimates of the geothermal power beneath the volcano, as assessed by the temporal changes on the ice-surface are not suggesting an increase. There are no clear indications that water is accumulating beneath the ice in the cauldron and, given the trend of the activity until now, it is unlikely to expect a flood in the next months. However, it is very important to keep following this process with regular measurements of the caldera and the ice-surface deformation.

"When considering all these data together, the interpretation is that the activity in Öræfajökull has been fairly stable over the last weeks without showing acceleration in the process. But it is considered too early to conclude that the activity is decreasing. For this reason the Icelandic Meteorological Office keeps the YELLOW level for the Aviation Color Code at Öræfajökull as the current status is still considered above the know background conditions." (IMO)

Strong earthquake swarm in Bárðarbunga volcano (not high number of earthquakes)

Posted on March 4, 2019 by Jón Frímann

This morning (4-March-2019) a strong earthquake swarm took place in Bárðarbunga volcano. Largest earthquake had a magnitude of 4,1 (at 05:52 UTC), second largest had a magnitude of 3,8 (at 05:46 UTC) and the third largest earthquake had a magnitude of 3,3 (at 06:03 UTC). Other earthquakes were smaller in magnitude.

The earthquake activity in Bárðarbunga volcano (green stars). Copyright of this image belongs to Icelandic Met Office.

Total of eight earthquakes where recorded in this swarm. This earthquake swarm is slightly unusual because its only been two weeks since a magnitude 4,2 earthquake took place in Bárðarbunga volcano. This are inflation related earthquakes, since Bárðarbunga volcano has been inflating since end of the eruption in Holuhraun in February 2015. This process is going to continue until next eruption happens in Bárðarbunga volcano system. This process can be at shortest be 1 year and at the longest this can take 104 years. I base this on Bárðarbunga volcano known eruption history. Details can be found in Global Volcanism Program information website about Bárðarbunga volcano.

Bardarbunga has undergone a few strong earthquakes recently(15 hours ago),and recently there have been numerous earthquake swarms in Askja volcano too,i am wondering if there is a connection here because the fissure eruption that happened a few years ago was in between these too volcanoes

NOVEMBER 24, 2019

Earthquake activity in Bárðarbunga volcano

The regular earthquake activity in Bárðarbunga volcano continued today (24-November-2019) early this morning. Two earthquakes larger than Mw3,0 took place. The first earthquake had a magnitude of Mw4,0 at 04:22 UTC and the second earthquake had a magnitude of 04:28 UTC and had a magnitude of Mw3,5. This earthquake activity happens due to inflation of Bárðarbunga volcano. This is a regular earthquake activity in Bárðarbunga volcano and is it is going to be like this for the next 10 to 30 years. With occasional magnitude Mw5,0 or larger earthquake happening in that time period.

Earthquake activity in Bárðarbunga volcano. Copyright of this image belongs to Icelandic Met Office.

This earthquake activity is not going to result in a eruption of Bárðarbunga volcano since this is too little earthquake activity for that too happen. This earthquake activity shows that an eruption is going to happen in next few years but when that happens is impossible to know.

Specialist remark

At 00:06 an M4.8 earthquake occurred in Bárðarbunga volcano. Few smaller aftershocks have been detected in the area. No volcanic tremor was detected. Last time that earthquakes of this magnitude took place in Bárðarbunga was in April and January this year. In both cases the earthquakes were also M4.8.

More information about Bárðarbunga volcano

Earthquake swarm offshore N-Iceland
An earthquake swarm is ongoing around 12 km NE of Grímsey. Since the swarm started on 25th of September seven earthquakes above M3 have been measured, thereof three above M4. The largest earthquakes were felt widely in Northern Iceland. Numerous smaller aftershocks are still being detected in the area.
