I noticed that the 5.2 and the 4.4 and these latest ones are all south rather than north. Equally they are all deeper than those to the north is this magna movement i wonder

post-4726-0-66708600-1417455264_thumb.jp  Not got the first bit because I was not even looking...tut

The 5.2 caused a long tremor, took until 16:30 to subside.

Thats how it looks, but it could also be coinciding with the calming weather, not sure.

Plodding along steadily isn't it. Interesting the lack of effect bar in Iceland over the gas erupted. So either Laki produced more or the weather conditions were more suitable for spreading it around.

The eruption that changed Iceland forever (laki)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8624791.stm

fascinating read but in a different league to how things stand at present

Back in 1783 it was ripped open with such force that a huge fissure produced scores of boiling craters. Over the next eight months the Lakagigar - literally "craters of Laki" - spewed lava that spread to cover 600 square kilometres in the surrounding countryside and belched more toxic gases than any eruption in the last 150 years. The effects were felt all over the northern hemisphere.

It is the second greatest eruption of the last 1,000 years, behind only the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia, says Stephen Self, visiting professor of volcanology at the Open University.

Laki's output of sulphur dioxide dwarfs the 1990 eruption of Pinatubo in the Philippines, which is famous for halting global warming for several years. While that eruption produced 17 mega tonnes of sulphur dioxide, Laki was pumping the same amount out every three days at its peak, says Self. He estimates Laki's power was over 100 times greater than the current eruption.

"The 1783 eruption pumped out so much sulphur gas, creating a huge cloud of sulphuric acid droplets which began to drift over Europe travelling eastwards over the whole world," he says

Morning Barbars,

Mag 5.4 recorded at 2:15, otherwise a quietish night.

The cams are better this morning and the flow from the new caldera looks high again.

Updated information 2 December 2014 10:00 - from geoscientist on duty

The last 24 hours two earthquakes, more than M5.0 have been detected at Bárðarbunga. The first, M5.2 at 12:52 occurred in the southeastern part of the caldera rim and the second, M5.4 at 02:18 in the northeastern part of the rim. Some earthquakes between 4 and 5 have also been detected. Ca 70 earthquakes (30 more than at the same time yesterday) have occurred at Bárðarbunga the last 24 hours. A few small earthquakes have been detected in the dyke intrusion.

View to the eruption site has been good via webcams this morning and no changes have been observed.

Pushing for space

Hitamynd_20141201_2039.jpg Thermal image from 1 Dec. shows considerable magmatic activity in the lava and in just over 24 hours it has stretched about 450 m to NNA in the new extrusion at the northeastern margin. West of the lava lake, the lava river now branches towards north. The southern margin is also active; a new extrusion seems to be forming due south from the lava lake and something similar is taking place just east of that. On this image, the plume appears like a brownish cloud over the middle part of the lava field and pillows of steam still seem to hover over the eastern part. Contrarily, the green effects are simply artefacts and tricks of light. Enlarge thermal image. Institute of Earth Sciences.

Updated information 3 December 2014 17:00 - from the Scientific Advisory Board

In a long meeting today, the Scientific Advisory Board of the Icelandic Civil Protection reviewed data about the development of events in Bárðarbunga and the volcanic eruption in Holuhraun, from the beginning of the unrest until the present day. Most of the data show a decline in the subsidence of the Bárðarbunga caldera and the volcanic eruption on Holuhraun. Earthquake activity is however still strong and the flow of lava great in comparison to volcanic eruptions in Iceland for more than a 100 years.

If the unrest continues in a similar fashion, the subsidence of Bárðarbunga and the volcanic eruption on Holuhraun will continue for at least some months. The situation could, of course, change and scenarios such as a subglacial eruption remain a possibility.

Notes from the meeting of the Scientific Advisory Board (pdf 0.4 Mb)

Many more interesting points are listed in the notes from today's meeting.

Nothing on cameras this morning and the trend of less recorded quakes continues over all. Time will tell if this a steady wind down of the eruption.

Updated information 7 December 2014 12:00 - from geoscientist on duty

About ten earthquakes of magnitude between M4 and M5 have been observed in the Bárðarbunga area during the past 24 hours. The largest quake was M4.5 at 10:38 this morning. In total, almost 120 quakes were observed during the past 24 hours, somewhat more than the day before. A few quakes were observed in the dike intrusion.

Since noon yesterday, the largest earthquake was an M4.4 at 15:10 (7 Dec.) located at the northeastern rim of the Bárðarbunga caldera. Seven other quakes over 4 in magnitude were detected at Bárðarbunga and all in all about 150 earthquakes there since noon yesterday. About ten quakes were detected in the dike intrusion. At least one occurred at Tungnafellsjökull. Visibility towards the eruptive site in Holuhraun has been good this morning.

Holuhraun Biggest Lava Flow in Centuries By Alëx Elliott December 08, 2014 03:25 Updated: December 08, 2014 07:53

holuhraun_eruption_glowing_lava_fall.jpg

If the Holuhraun volcanic eruption continues as it has done, then both the sinking of Bárðarbunga and the eruption itself can be expected to continue for at least several more months.

The longer the current eruption continues, the less likely it becomes that Bárðarbunga will erupt, as had been feared. “Things could develop differently and scenarios involving an eruption under the glacier and in Bárðarbunga are still possibilities,†according to the scientific committee of the Civil Protection Agency, as reported by mbl.is.

The scientists pored over data from the way the eruption and seismological events have developed since the beginning of the episode this summer. The earthquake swarm at Bárðarbunga is one of the biggest ever recorded in a mountain anywhere in the world—although the sinking of Bárðarbunga and the intensity of the Holuhraun eruption have both slowed of late.

“Seismic activity and lava production are though still large-scale in comparison to eruptions in Iceland over the last hundred years,†the committee explained.

Several days after the eruption started, the craters of Bárðarbunga began to sink by up to 80 centimeters a day. That rate has slowed gradually and now stands at about 25 cm per day.

The new lava spewed out from Holuhraun represents the biggest lava flow in Iceland since the Skaftáreldar eruptions (1783-1784) and is likely the world’s third-biggest lava flow since that time.
