clear again and amazing background colours tonight

That thin hot lava is still sloshing out alright, river like, it floods its plain, until the end, or the next bit.

No problems with building and planning permission on lava flood planes, not as obvious as river ones but twice as bad...fire+water...

Still dumb to build on either IMO        post-4726-0-38098500-1417197322_thumb.jp

Thats it, it is just lots of very hot very liquid rock spewing out peacefully, like Hawaii.  The shaking is mainly 99% off screen at the back The shaking has easily surpassed the entire output of man since the industrial revolution in Iceland and here in the UK combined.... From a sheer energy point of view. We are mouse like.

The river of lava continues to expand the lava field. It's now almost 75 km2

all info in link with some superb photos

photos: Glowing Lava Fall in Holuhraun By Eygló Svala Arnarsdóttir November 28, 2014 09:25 Updated: November 28, 2014 09:56

holuhraun_eruption_glowing_lava_fall.jpg

The lava fall.

A lava fall has formed in Holuhraun in the northeastern highlands. A branch of the lava river flowing from the crater has reached the edge of the new lava field in the north and cascades like a red-hot waterfall over the edge and down to the sand plains below.

The above picture was posted on the University of Iceland’s Twitter account yesterday. The accompanying text said that the new lava field is continuing to expand and now covers almost 75 square km (30 square miles), which is larger than the Reykjavík metropolitan area.

Approximately 130 cubic meters (4,600 cubic feet) of magma flow from the Bárðarbunga volcano magma chamber under Vatnajökull glacier every second through the intrusive dike and erupt in Holuhraun, ruv.is reports (mbl.is reported yesterday that 60-100 cubic meters of lava were being emitted every second).

IR editor and photographer Páll Stefánsson flew over Holuhraun on Tuesday and captured pictures of the lava river, which he says are his “most spectacular yet.â€

The result of his fourth and fifth trip to the eruption site will be published in the upcoming issue of Iceland Review magazine (click here to subscribe).

More photos of the lava fall can be seen here.

Dear Iceland.

we in Britain, that is not as great as it used to be. But we still are interested.

Hope you can find a longer antenna for your caldera GPS

Failing that we are all reliant on your brave flyers getting over the caldera.

  Please show pictures soon.

Updated information 28 November 2014 11:30 - from the Scientific Advisory Board

Scientists flew over Bárðarbunga on Wednesday, 26 November. According to data acquired in the flight, the total subsidence of the caldera is 50 meters and the volume is 1.4 cubic kilometers. No signal is now received from the station in the caldera and the most likely explanation is that

subsidence of the caldera is so great that the GPS station is now below the caldera rim and is therefore out of sight

of

the relay station in Kverkfjoll.

Just read the above John, they need to get that sorted, but rather them than me lol

we need all cylinders firing here to know everything if you know what i mean

hi all

oh i agree with you

maybe they now think its not safe enough now to do this now

not sure on that

however if we keep seeing these large quakes i would think they will need all the info they can get

http://www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/bardarbunga-2/

when i look at that link i personally do not see much difference to the last couple of weeks

what happens next???

I don't know John,it's a hard one to crack this one, with all the EQ's that have gone off over the months you would expext that it had blown by now,do we wait for the fissure to completely stop so the preasure builds more in Barda it's self or is it a different magma chamber to Barda?

i read somewhere that the huloruan fissure eruption site has a different magma chamber, but don't know if this is true or not

so,so complicated.

as for the fissure eruption,it has slowed down somewhat but not much, still spewing 60-100 cubic meters of lava per second, that still sounds a lot.

hi all

very tricky one

but when you read this

http://icelandreview.com/news/2014/11/24/bardarbunga-magma-closer-surface

and the gps sinking out of range

it still means the situation could turn at bara

re the different chamber

i have seen that too but i was on the assumption that the chamber at bara was feeding huloruan

its all very confusing and while the imo keep the 3 options open i would not rule anything out

anyway bedtime for me

goodnight all :lazy:

Bárdarbunga volcano news & activity updates Bardarbunga volcano update: Lava fall in Holuhraun’s growing lava field

Saturday Nov 29, 2014 11:46 AM |

These two images were posted on the twitter account of the University of Iceland after their recent field expedition. As the lava field continues to expand, new branches of red hot rivers reach its edge and cascade down on the sandy plain below in a spectacular ‘water’fall of glowing lava. Scientists report that by now the Holuhraun lava field covers almost 75 square kilometres which represents an area bigger than the Reykjavik metropolitan area.

The intensity of the eruption declined so that the present amount of emitted lava is only a quarter of what it was at the eruption’s most intense phase. But according to Ãrmann Höskuldsson, volcanologist at the University of Iceland Earth Science Institute, there are no indications that the volcanic activity will stop anytime soon. He points out that it remains a very intense eruption despite the recent (temporarily?) weakening of its activity. Scientists observed fluctuations in the eruption plume last week due to sporadic emission of powerful lava jets. The lava flow discharge pulsated accordingly.

The exact amount of magma flowing from the Bárðarbunga magma chamber through the intrusive dike below the Vatnajökull glacier and eventually erupting in Holuhraun is presently unclear. The Icelandic Broadcasting Service (RUV) reports it to be 130 cubic metres asecond, whereas the newspaper Morgunblaðið (mbli.is) estipmates it to be between 60 and 100 cubic metres per second.

The area continues to be very seismically active with every day a few earthquakes larger than M = 3 at the Bárðarbunga caldera and weaker trembling around the dike intrusion (Icelandic Met Office).

High and dangerous winds forecast after 12 o'clock today. No weather for traveling. Fasten loose things. Heavy rain with rising stream and river levels in the south and the west. Fording rivers is dangerous.

Becoming SE 18-25 m/s after 12 o'clock with heavy rain in the southern half of Iceland.

Turning to southwest 20-30 m/s (Beaufort force 9 to 11) with sleet- and later snowshoers in the western half. Also in the NE tonight.

30 November 2014 13:00 - from geoscientist on duty

Since 12:00 yesterday, 29 November, around 90 earthquakes have been detected within Bárðarbunga. Most of the recorded seismicity occurred on the northern side of the volcano's caldera. Similar to yesterday, hardly any earthquake activity was detected along the dyke intrusion.

Since yesterday's report, two earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 have been recorded. The first one at 04:16 today, followed by a second magnitude 4.5 earthquake at 08:11. Both earthquakes were sourced from the caldera of Bárðarbunga. An additional twenty earthquakes equal to or greater than magnitude 3 have been registered.

In comparison to the last 48 hours, the level of earthquake activity from the caldera is HIGHER. Similar changes in earthquake rate have been observed several times since the unrest began at Bárðarbunga in mid August.

At the time of writing, there is a clear view of the eruption site from the Míla camera on Vaðalda. The last 24 hours of images show no obvious changes in the size or intensity of the eruption

Morning Barbardians,

Cams not too much help this morning.

The storm of yesterday seems to be abating, but the wind direction is bringing the plume directly towards the mila cams. so the eruption is not visible

Quite a big M4.2 at about 5:20 this morning and a very large one is showing for yesterday evening on the Von charts.

Also all the recorders are showing an increase in pressure in the last 12 hours.

The Iceland Met Office are reporting winds of storm force 12 hit the island yesterday evening.
