Gush and splashes

The eruptive plume and the lava stream 20 November 2014 at 5PM. Pulsating activity; every 10-15 minutes an explosion in the crater was followed by a gush of magma down the lava stream with splashes to either side. Photo: Ãrmann Höskuldsson.

They do semm to cluster JP

ie 4 around the 2/4km mark within an hour and before that 5 around the 9/12km mark within a period of 30/45mins which seems to be the pattern at present.

I'm no expert so don't know whether that is significant or not

pretty strong there tonight

hi jonboy

i would call stronger supply of magma from source when deeper, which is why

we are seeing quakes coming in quicker succession

only my opinion mind

when looking for possible volcano eruption or activity

looking at deep quakes going to shallow in swarms is normally a telling point of potential eruption

read the above mate it might help (only brief)

It is a bit like the new kind of warfare we see these days, we wait with baited breath...

I found the lava field at H alarming when looking deeply, reason is, it has never been like this since Laki, nothing more.

I am sure i would place my joker at the NE flank, if I was put on the spot at any time in the last three months, likewise today and on...

The worst case scenario... ...big explosive eruption VE 6+ is easy within range of Bada at the moment in my opinion, if the wrong events happen down there deep...

I don't expect any major eruptions of vei 6 the eruption seems to have really reached a steady state. The only questions are 1) Will new fissures open up 2) How long will this go on for?

Perhaps it will do a Pu'u 'o''o and still be erupting in 30 years time....

I think the fissure will cause a flank weakness, its the size and shape of Bada and Hawaii does not shake like this and nothing happen, Iceland is due a big eruption, Bada fits the bill.

Still the fissure could grow...

I speculate that if Hekla erupts first or during Badabunga eruption then Badabunga will only be a bad VE 4 but if Hekla does not erupt than Bada is a 6... :hi:

Fluctuating Lava Flow in Holuhraun By Eygló Svala Arnarsdóttir November 21, 2014 16:09

eruption_holuhraun_lava_03.jpg?itok=2F8B

Photo: Bernard Meric.

The volcanic eruption in Holuhraun continues to be strong, although its productivity has decreased from mid-September. The activity is similar to what it has been in the last two weeks but the lava flow is more fluctuating.

The flow is forming an extrusion to the east-southeast, as stated in the latest status report from the Scientific Advisory Board of the Icelandic Civil Protection, released at noon today.

The Seismic activity in Bárðarbunga volcano under Vatnajökull glacier continues to be strong. The biggest earthquake detected there since noon on Wednesday was of magnitude 4.6. In total 16 earthquakes bigger then magnitude 4.0 were detected over the period and 39 between magnitude 3.0 and 3.9. In total 170 earthquakes were detected in Bárðarbunga since noon on Wednesday.

In total 65 minor earthquakes were detected in the intrusive dike, connecting Bárðarbunga and Holuhraun, over the period, which is greater activity then detected there over the past few weeks. Most of the earthquakes were detected in the northern end of the dike but about 15, including the larger ones, hit further to the south and under Vatnajökull.

The subsidence of the Bárðarbunga caldera and tectonics continues at a similar rate as in the last few weeks. Tectonics movements show a depression towards Bárðarbunga.

Today sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas pollution is expected to the north of the eruption site. Tomorrow, gas pollution is expected in West Iceland.

For forecasts, go to vedur.is and information on SO2 levels and pollution advice can be found airquality.is.

:hi:

Helka won't have any effect on how Bada erupts.

Interesting that the lava eruption seems to diminishing which may be an indication that eruption may cease sometime soon.

I think Hekla is a pressure valve LOL.

My thoughts are of a diminishing fissure eruption too.  I think the pulses are a sign of this. I am sure even if the fissure stops dead, the Badabunga eruption will not be over, it will just move, I think that's what happens with these break out fissures.

There is a new article in Icelandic that suggests the lava is closer to the surface than previously thought  http://www.ruv.is/frett/kvika-naer-yfirbordi-bungunnar-en-talid-var  1 to 3 km rather than 5 to 8km, interesting...

Here is an interesting comparison a picture from

Eggert Norðdahl

https://www.flickr.com/photos/35133216@N05/14951175976/ it shows the infamous Laki fissure, it looks like the one at Holuhraun, the lava drained away and sunk down the hole, which then later filled with water

Imagine the same thing with Holuhraun and it looks the same...One big crater with a run off gulley, massive lava field.

Oh god I have the big letters again, sorry... :nonono:

20 so no slow down here

still plenty of deep ones so no slow down of magma to it

23 November 2014 12:00 - from geoscientist on duty

The situation remains unchanged, although a slight decrease in the number of larger earthquakes has been observed in recent weeks.

A M5.1 earthquake occurred on the southern caldera rim of Bárðarbunga at 09:22 this morning. This was the first M>5 event since last Sunday. Additionally, 14 events exceeded M4 and around 20 were in the range between M3.0 and M3.9. Activity was relatively high throughout last night and dropped considerably  following the M5.1 this morning. Similar patterns of increased activity before and decreased activity after M>5 earthquakes have been frequent in the last weeks at Bárðarbunga.

Activity in the dyke intrusion was rather low, but has slightly increased following the M5.1 earthquake this morning. About 15 events have been detected, all below M1.0. A slight increase of seismicity in the dyke during the first hours after M>5 earthquakes at the caldera rim has also been observed in several previous cases since the onset of the activity.

No obvious changes in the volcanic activity at the eruption site in Holuhraun, based on camera observation.
