I survived the Market Rasen 5.2 in 2008. :-)

60 miles or so from the epicentre, but a very odd sensation nonetheless.

In a straight line was it only 17 or so miles here, wife though a truck had hit the house! worst for me was it sounded like millions of  mini jack hammers, echoing very slowly away while being in a huge cave. .Very spooky until thoughts came of 'its just a earthquake not a nasty distant bomb' sorry off topic to bard.

It might be weather related, but the tremor plots on the IMO site are showing quite rapidly increasing activity.

Whilst the weather ruins the graphs and equipment in Iceland, something to ponder on a quiet Sunday.

All the Mag 3 and above in the area concerned since August, Auto corrected (and selectively manually corrected I think, not sure) To date @21 09 2014, 0930 UK.   post-4726-0-19021900-1411289778_thumb.jp

That is some great footage.

Love the way the lava looks like waves crashing against rocks.

Right, have just woken up and the first earthquake I see is a 4.5 followed by a 5.5! That's quite a start to my day!

The 5.5 is the largest earthquake in several days, maybe even in a week.

Some great info there rusty  --  the number of quakes in the North Eastern quadrant show that there's a lot happening there and supports JP's theory of a flank collapse.  I wonder whether there is any inflation on that flank?

As for that NASA video,  great find PL-- amazing -- glad I wasn't the pilot

Magnitude 5.5 not too long ago, that should shake things up a bit!

140921_1225.png

Interesting that the number of smaller quakes definitely seems to be dropping and the energy released in one big one (like the 5.5 mentioned by Sainsbo) is equivalent to over 3,000  in the M2 range

A Magnitude 5.5 releases ~175,000 times as much energy as a Mag 2.0. Really puts into perspective how much more stress the big quakes are putting on the caldera than the small ones!

I noticed the big quakes seem to be around the 8-9km depth, not sure what that means, but could be a blockage or something coming under pressure from a new injection of magma?

Life Threating to go near Eruption. Gases Kill Birds By Benedikt Jóhannesson September 21, 2014 12:50

eruption_holuhraun.jpg?itok=6mmriWUc

It you go to the eruption now, it may be the last thing you do. Photo: Bernard Meric.

Civil Protection in Iceland stresses that not respecting that the eruption site at Holuhraun is closed to the public may be life threatening. Six new trails made by tourists were found yesterday. Birds that died of poisoning have been found at the eruption site.

Víðir Reynisson of the Civil Protection told RÚV this morning that: Holuhraun is the most dangerous place in Iceland and must be respected as such. People must think before they act.†He added that an eruption might suddenly begin under Dyngjujökull, starting a huge flood and an ash producing eruption.

Víðir says that scientists and other workers are really in grave dangerous. The Civil Protection thinks it can save the 20 to 30 people working on scene, but it would be impossible to save many more people in case of an emergency. He continued: “This may be a matter of minutes in case of a flood. People have maybe thirty minutes to an hour before it becomes too dark to find your way in case of an ash producing eruption. This is an area in which it is very difficult to drive unless you have full visibility.â€

Cheers Sainsbo,

Got my Orders of Magnitude mixed up.  You are right, it is 175,000 times the amount of energy.

I see another 4.2 since your comment as well (JP's already mentioned it)  Back up in the North Eastern side.  Would be lovely if we could see what each of these quakes are doing, My assumption (especially looking at the GPS) is that the ring faults are weakening around most of the cladera and the additional weight of the ice is increasing the EQ strength

This rifting episode is a first for the Interweb.

Bada is just next to the rift, that is a bonus or not, depends on the outcome I guess.

The point is a certain resonance is apparent.

This could have serious consequences for local geology.

what is this telling us,is it a glitch?

i know we have to wait a bit for the actual data to verify, but if this stays like this then something drastic has happened
