Oh dear snow cover over Europe is preety woeful at the moment- despite some promising early cover in the east.

Europe to go into the freezer http://www.drroyspencer.com/2014/12/europe-to-greet-new-year-with-snow-and-cold/

Europe - time for a pattern flip! This is temp anomaly map for the last 7 days, notice very warm period over much of Europe while northern Scandinavia has cooled down significantly. As soon as the blocking over Atlantic establishes this weekend, arctic outbreak with be rapidly spreading far south towards Mediterranean. Is everyone ready for winter blast? Some areas will receive a great amount of snow and much colder than average temepratures (right image).

Global sea ice extent highest on record.

Those data are encouraging. My (very basic) understanding is that Arctic ice is about or below normal, and Antarctic ice is quite a lot above normal.

Latest weekly Arctic sea ice extent update here https://forum.netweather.tv/topic/74411-arctic-ice-data-and-stats/?p=3112462

Down into the bottom 3 by most measures now.

Additionally, northern hemisphere snow cover was the 20th lowest on record for the northern hemisphere. http://climate.rutgers.edu/snowcover/table_rankings.php?ui_set=1

The sea ice coverage might look ok, but it's currently close to lowest on record for the time of year.

A few place to check:

http://www.natice.noaa.gov/ims/

We should start seeing the first few -10s and widespread -5s at the 850hPa level over the next few weeks.

There'll probably be a new thread soon. Whoever opens it can reap all the up votes/likes!
