Russia's now about 95% full of snow!  Unbelievable really.  Just to show how quickly the snow and ice advances, I've shown 30th October vs 30th November:

If only the snow advance would maintain that rate, we could be white for Xmas and the NY!

I am more shocked about how the ice is doing,it has been doing very well over the past mouth.

Again snow is retreating across the Boston area and the states south of new England.

However on a positive note a quite a big gain of ice in the Hudson Bay.

There seems to be no snow in the rest of Western Europe but there's still 1-2cm lying in the centre of Belgium from 2 days ago even at low altitudes (and Belgium doesn't really have any high altitudes). I'm assuming it's quite localised.

From Wipneus of the sea ice forum, here's the sea ice extent growth over the last week.

5th largest Northern Hemisphere snow cover extent on record for November. 15th largest for Eurasia and the largest on record for North America.

All probably due to the disrupted polar vortex and a reason why Hudson bay has so much ice and the great lakes have seen early ice growth. The interesting bit hear is if we see a vortex that is brokeb apart for most of winter are we likely to see a late reformation and a late start to the next melt season. Very intresting times ahead

Record amount of snow cover across northern hemisphere (unless you like in the Uk :wallbash: )screenhunter_523-dec-05-00-49.jpg?w=640

That is quite a significant increase in snow cover in the NH over the past 50 years - close to 5% and still on an upward trend.

The forecasted setup forthcoming is for continuing dominance of low pressure and troughing with plenty of cold air mixed in over Southern Europe in particular. Should one want to read some more into things over there, check out Steve Murr's post from last night and click on the final two links within his post, these help illustrate the increasing snow risk over Europe.

Moving back to the updated situation according to the Ensembles versus Climate anomalies for the UK.

I'm not using any charts going past the 6th to 8th December timeframe attached, for the UK as next Tuesday's storm could go anywhere right now and easily affect the bigger picture in NW Europe into the middle of next week.

post-7183-0-91238800-1417780223_thumb.pn

You can see from the above, it is largely a cooler than average setup across a vast part of the UK right up to early to mid next week. Across the continent, it is a rather complex picture, as to be expected by dominant troughing with mild and cold air and rain and some snow in the mix.

post-7183-0-69404300-1417780484_thumb.pn

Moving further on to the 9th - 11th December timeframe, the Ensemble Mean vs Climate Average Temperature setup for Europe looks like this.

post-7183-0-89387500-1417780555_thumb.pn

Again, a mixture of warmer areas and much cooler regions, especially noteworthy are the negative Temperature anomalies associated with the nearby Benelux countries and Spain and France.

Finally, looking at the 12th - 14th December timeframe, the Ensemble Mean vs Climate Average Temperature anomalies for Europe are forecast as follows.

post-7183-0-92906900-1417780731_thumb.pn

Looking at the bigger picture, the positives are most definitely the continuance of PM flows expected over NW Europe with the main focus on the UK rather than Scandinavia for a change. The NH Jetstream continues in its meandering state and although expected to ramp up a bit at times, its' axis is often shown to lie NW to SE and even N to S, so no fear of any ongoing SWr'ly influence. In fact, other than the slightly warmer weekend where it might reach double-digits in Western parts for a while and during next Tuesday, the general weather pattern remains on the cool to cold side, over the next seven to ten days. The likelihood of a little transient snowfall, even to some lower elevations during any showery outbreaks is a trend which is slowly firming up as we head nearer to the middle of December, IMHO.  :cold:

The NH Air Pressure anomalies for the period from the 6th December, right through to the 14th December confirm this general continual trend as described above.

It looks as if most of our snowy Winters coincided with lower than average N hemisphere cover. 2010 maybe an exception.
