The weather can be quite a sneaky thing sometimes - a promised warm and thundery Summer becomes dull and unsettled, the prospect of lots of heavy snow in Winter just becomes mostly rainy affairs... it doesn't always go as we hoped or dreamed for.

But, what would be your dream Summer/Autumn/Winter/Spring? And what type of weather would it include? For example, would your Winter be constantly mild with frequent spells of Atlantic frontal rain? Would Autumn be full of unusually warm spells? Things like that. You may just include just one season if you like when discussing your ultimate season set-ups. :)

For me, Summer would be generally warm and settled (similar to what has occurred so far), with the Azores High Pressure system constantly sending some of its ridging to our East. Then, as Lows to the West bump up against the High Pressure to the East, hot and thundery breakdowns would be introduced. Ideally, most of the precipitation that falls would be of extremely torrential hail and rain with loud bangs of thundery and reasonably frequent lightning. Ocassional night-time storms included. At most, there would be no more than two spells of frontal rain during Summer, with most of the wet stuff coming from high-quality thunderstorms and showers. During the hottest spell, temperatures would reach up to 38*C, but only lasting for two days. Summer would, however, be above average in general.

A dream Autumn would feature a number of unusually warm and unusually cold spells with a very early snowfall at the beginning of October. This of which would be caused by an exceptionally potent and unstable Northerly wind bringing much colder air than normal for the time of year. There would be a few odd periods of frontal rain, otherwise most of the precipitation would come in the form of showers, many of which would be wintry. September, though, would be mostly warm and sunny throughout with frequent Southerly or South-Easterly winds. Autumn wouldn't be that windy, either.

Winter would feature strong Northern blocking throughout with Lows constantly getting forced to the South of the UK providing frequent snowfalls on their Northern flanks. There would hardly be any rain, except for some rain-to-snow events. Specifically, I'd have a repeat of 28th January 2004, where rain turned fully into torrential snow within one minute! But it wouldn't all be snowy, though, as there would be sunnier, quieter periods with slack winds and thick frost. To round it off, there would be unstable North-Easterly airflows with a segment of the Polar Vortex dropping down into Europe unleashing some monsterous sunshine and snow shower set-ups... But with some of these falling as hail as well. The 850 hPa temperatures would dip down to -20*C during Easterly/North-Easterly episodes, with the Winter's CET -6*C below average. The deepest snowfall would be up to 50.01cm and consist of snowflakes 2x larger than a £2 coin.

Finally, for Spring, it would be a mixture of everything. Sunny spells, snow showers, hail showers, thunder, few odds spells of rain (drizzle not included), gusty periods, calm periods, and warm and cold spells. May would generally veer on the hot side, though, with temperatures 2*X above average. However, May 1st would see a rare UK-wide snowfall.

Just another aspect about this topic is the weather events don't necessarily have to be realistic (e.g: a very deep Polar Low of 750mb giving a 2,000 meter dumping of snow over Carding Mill Valley).

Spring - warm days, with cold nights that still require you to snuggle under a blanket. Some nice heavy April showers, but for the most part, not a washout.

Summer - long hot days, broken up by long overnight MCS storms (very similar to what we're getting this year - it's been my best Summer in recent memory). 1997/1999 sping to mind.

Autumn - same as Spring but a little warmer. Some Autumn storms would be nice too.

Winter - short but sweet. Ideally a month (including Christmas) with lot's of deep, heavy snow, freezing nights and frosty mornings. 2010 springs to mind.

In short I like my summers hot and stormy and my winters cold and snowy.

1995 Summer

2011 Autumn

2007 Spring

2013 Winter

Particularly like your first choice. I think that was the Summer with that very warm and dry August. As a matter of fact, quickly looking at the GFS model archive for that month, it was certainly rather High Pressure dominated.

Winter - December would be very similar to December 2010. Long and severe cold spells, but also the occasional 1-2 day milder interlude to melt older snowfalls and keep the newer snowfalls nice and fresh. Christmas Eve would also see a major snowstorm begin around late morning and continue into the early hours of Christmas Day, to bring a true White Christmas. January and February would then follow the same pattern as December really.

A repeat of December 2010 would be nice. It seemed to have everything cold spell fans wanted (except perhaps for exceptionally deep cold, but I suppose then again, this is the UK).  Kind of a shame it doesn't happen more often really. Also like the idea of the Christmas Eve snowstorm. While their's been one or two recent events in the last few years where snow remained on the ground on Christmas Day, I think a proper white Christmas like that is overdue anyway, and something I'd love to see.

Personally I'd take a NE USA climate, a New England, Great Lakes type one would do.

Heat in summer, cold and plenty of snow in winter with always a chance of gales and storms.

If it's a case of comparing with events in this country then summer 95 (76) was to hot will do with winter of 79 to follow.

Spring and autumn, nothing comes to mind although I'd prefer a dry spring and a stormy and if need be very wet autumn.

Spring- A pretty episodic March, reminiscent of March 1995 but with sharper temperature fluctuations, cold and snowy near both ends, but some warm dry sunny spells in between.  April starts off showery with some thunder, then the rest of the month features a lot of warm, sunny weather, but with a cold snap around the 15th-20th bringing snow and hail showers and occasional thunder.  A hot spell at the end of April into early May, with occasional thundery outbreaks, but then another cold snap in the second week of May with some snow and hail showers.  A mix of warm dry sunny spells and cooler showery interludes with some hail and thunder rounds off the second half of May.

Summer- June starts off like June 1975, with wintry showers at the beginning, and then an abrupt switch-around to hot sunny conditions, but then a thundery breakdown on the 7th, reminiscent of the 7th June 1996.  Some warm sunshine but also showers and thunder in the second week, then mostly warm/hot, dry and sunny in the second half (hottest around the 18th-21st) but with a thundery interruption around the 21st-25th.  July has showery thundery periods near both ends and around midmonth, with a lot of warm/hot dry sunny weather in between those periods.  August ends up the driest and sunniest month, often hot by day but with some cool nights near both ends of the month.  Some brief thundery interruptions around the 10th, 18th and 27th.  July and August feature average maximum temperatures of around 25C and average minima of around 13C.

Autumn- September gets off to a mostly warm sunny start but with a thundery interruption around the 4th-6th.  A cooler showery and windy episode follows around midmonth giving the first real taste of autumn, but then the second half sees predominantly warm sunny weather return, with the odd thundery interruption.  Further warm sunny spells continue during the first two-thirds of October (hot at the start of the month), but interrupted by an unusually potent northerly in the second week bringing thundery wintry showers.  Windy and cooler at times in the last third of the month with blustery showers including some hail.  November features warm sunshine by day and misty nights in the first week, but then frequent potent arctic northerlies and north-westerlies after that, giving frequent snow showers and occasional thunder.

Winter- December ends up cold with frequent snow showers, occasionally accompanied by thunder, in the first and last weeks,  Often milder in between, but with another cold snap midmonth, and overall the cold spells end up sufficient to produce a mean monthly temperature fractionally below zero.  Cold snowy weather continues during the first week of January, and returns around midmonth and the 24th-28th (often associated with blustery westerlies and north-westerlies, reminiscent of the January 1984 setup) but with some mild sunny interludes in between..  February has some mild sunny spells in the first two-thirds, but with a cold, snowy and at times windy interruption in the second week, and we then get a very potent north-easterly spanning much of the last third of the month, bringing heavy snow showers and occasional thunder.

May: 20-25c high, 0-10c low, mostly hot by day, cold by night, some t-storms/showers.

June: 25-30c high, 5-15c low, very hot most days, cooler by the evening.

July: 25-35c high, 10-15c low, hot and dry days and warm evenings.

August: 20-30c high, 10-15c low, hot still, but increasingly humid/erratic, plenty of t-storms/storms.

September: 15-25c high, 5-15c low, increasingly cool, plenty of rain/wind/storms/t-storms with a few sunny days.

October: 5-15c high, -5c-0c low, increasingly cold, first snows, plenty of storms/wind.

November-December: very cold, increasingly sub-zero highs, ice days, heavy snow/storms, little sun.

You better make sure these Thundery wintry showers set-ups happen then, Thundery wintry showers! I bet a lot of the Thundery wintry showers' fans will be expecting numerous showers of hail/rain/sleet/snow, with thunder, to occur over their houses this coming Autumn and Winter. So please don't fail us, Thundery wintry showers!  :)  :p

I'd agree in large part with what you have chosen from a NW perspective. The above would have resulted in a cold very snowy winter followed by a very mixed spring with snow and northerlies interspersed with warmer spells, summer dry and hot - though it would mean hosepipe bans and drought so some rain wouldn't go amiss, a largely very settled Autumn with a cold snowy November - could swap Nov 85 with 93, a classic of a December.

If you had to say which 12 month period I would opt for I'd go March 95 through to Feb 96 - never bettered such a 12 month period... though it was exceptionally dry.

For the benefit of you hot and cold lovers you would go along way to beat these Canadian season I experienced.

Spring 2010 - Had everything record breaking heat 31c in early May followed by snow 36 hrs later..alternating between hot and cold for 2 months then ended with big storms that followed on into a very stormy summer.

Summer 2012 - 3 months of July, August & September wall to wall sunshine temperatures 28-34c on most days hottest 3 months on record in Calgary.

Autumn 2010 - Beautiful warm 4 weeks during September and October followed by brutal cold and lots of snow in November.

Winter 2011 - The mother of all winters very cold and extremely snowy..the snowiest winter in 40 years over 200cm of snow recorded..followed by the coldest March in 90 years ...March ave temp a bone chilling -10.7c. (Dec -15c, Jan -16c, Feb -16c)
