BIG storm just skirted by to the west of here. Deep, booming thunder and tempestuous skies.

Most active ones now over North Cotswolds/ South Warks, the Stratford one seems to be getting zapped as it meets the Coventry shower ahead of it!

I've just been watching that on the lightning detector, but it really doesn't look that bad. I wonder if Manchester will get any?

It was rumbling away like anything. Sounded fairly active.

Localised cell to the south of the main belt appears to have intensified- getting some more thunder and lightning out of this one as well.

It must be a lot of in-cloud lightning then. I believe the lightning detector only picks up cloud-to-ground strikes.

Not strictly true, the following taken from Blitzortung

No. It depends on station density and stroke type. Detection rate is better on cloud to ground strikes, than on intra cloud.

Torrential rain, thunder and lightning directly overhead. Not showing on lightning detector maps? Pretty active. Travelling roughly  E - W.

Nope, I think the Manchester storm has fizzled out now, not heard any thunder for a while now.

Yep, just moderate rain and distant thunder before. Can see the Merseyside cell from here.Seems to be the story of the year apart from a fortnight ago. Storms approaching Greater Manchester dies out whilst Merseyside gets storms often developing over or before they reach that area.

Front (Occluded?) has now passed through.. half a dozen thunderclaps and one very close strike accompanied with 'shotgun' thunder. Not a great thunderstorm but what was impressive was the convection behind the core of the storm. I have footage of it but finding compatability software between my galaxy s2 and apple mac is proving to be quite a pain..

That's over us now. Some big strikes but not too frequent.

Just wow! Massive cell/trough thing with lots of thunder and IC lightning. No CGs though. Big rainbow afterwards, and now sunny and raining. Can hear lots of sferics still all around.
