You know the weather is about to do something spectacular when I miss going to the pub on a Friday night in favor of forum-reading on NW instead, bit of a breeze picked up here this morning but the humidity can be felt in the air and things about to go boom within the next 6 hours or so.

6z NMM puts high levels off CAPE further west slightly.

Still all to play for!

Novice question - with CAPE do you need it to get a storm going or to maintain or both?

Something building overhead here, gone quite dark and the cloud looks menacing in the distance.

London last night.  I don't think I've seen something like that in years.  Let's hope tonight is a mouthwatering MCS, we deserve it.   Harry/Lauren may know the last MCS import we had; it's going back over a decade ago or more.

Hot and sunny with a fresh onshore breeze here, watching the left over rubbish from the south drift past to the west. Dead as a dead storm system can be.

Yep, there's hazy, but potent sunshine here in C London - My home wx station is already reading 29c....

the question About Cape - it's one (Although an important one) ingredient in the mixing bowl, high Cape = High instability = lots of lovely lift which is needed to create nice tall clouds, and subsequently thunderstorms. High Cape is good for lightning too, and big hail...

I am 120% sure that Nick or AJ could explain it better......

I can honestly say I have NEVER seen lightning like that in the UK, EVER. Doesn't matter where I live dammit. Seen it in Spain, Italy, France, the USA....NEVER the UK :(

Robbie, the MCS of summers 97 and 99. I remember them well. Truly the last great storms we had.

With all the low cloud today I was feeling a bit pessimistic about anything happening later, but John Hammond has just cheered me right up.

I think it's both. You need high CAPE to start convection and then to sustain it, but I think the Lifting Index is more important regarding the formation of the thunderstorms.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm in the process of learning myself. :good:

Shameless self-plug I know, but for those asking about what role CAPE plays in thunderstorm development etc., my guides might be useful reading (or they might be utter garbage...) :)

Nice to see the Meto extending an amber warning to some parts (me included).  Can't wait to see what happens but I am not getting my hopes up too much as it avoids the disappointment!

That's the year. Wasn't it October or August 1999? I remember 1997 being huge just after Princess Diana passed away. Paris was 110*F the weekend before.

Ha! My technical descriptions are appalling, I am better drawing them with sharpies, and using daft analogies. (as Tour one discovered this year)
