Entering that time of year when you can get almost twilight conditions in the north under clear skies. Drawing curtains after 10pm, mornings light at 4.30am.. best time of year.

We're getting close to when there is always a very faint glow on the northern horizon, and by around 1:30am that glow becomes noticeable even to people not looking for it. Then we get to the stage where you can report sunny weather before 5am in the morning.

This was taken at around 4:50am in June 2010.. very nice. The sun is poking from above the clouds, not the horizon.

I've been in the Scottish Highlands as far as Inverness travelling through the night, and the "Simmer Dim" around the solstice can be a little disconcerting if you've not experienced it.

Disagree strongly i'm afraid regarding the best time of the year, total waste of the best part of the day when sunrise is 4:30 am!!

For those of the short days/long nights persuasion, the longest day is just a tad over three weeks away.

Even with rubbish weather like today, the fact that it is still light at 9.30pm makes up for it.

The earliest sunrise is today so we are back down that slippery slope until December 29th!

But the latest sunset has yet to occur, and the decline is not noticeable at all until we are well into July. I think for most working-age adults we probably won't see the sun rising until September (assuming most people in the UK work a 9-5 routine which obviously doesn't apply to everyone).

i think most people these days do not do a 9-5 job, times have changed over the last 10 to 15 years, many have very early starts as they work for small companies where the working day is not fixed by the old routines of set hours.

You can certainly tell the later sunrise now,not really light now till 5am. The speed of change is very apparent.

No longer light until ten:( half nine now and it's dark:( Best thing about summer is the extra evening daylight.

Yup, not long until I'll be able to go home at the end of a night shift and it's still dark :)
