One thing that always amuses me is how those who look forward to the long days of summer during the winter months are seemingly "wishing their lives away" yet those who do the same in May and June are being "normal". Funny perception...

Sorry, don't get statement at all,its a season thing, surely we should enjoy each season as a individual event, enjoying what ever it brings.

When it's relentless gloomy miserable wet windy mild muck...then it's as enjoyable as a migraine.

Saw a bit of sun for a minute this morning, which i've never done (not at this time of day anyway) on the days of the sol. We've only a second to loose in daylight hours between now and 4am tomorrow so the sun will rise in the same place, until gradually returning back on it's northerly inclination ready for the spring/summer months.

'As the days grow longer the cold grows stronger' - well certainly couldn't get any weaker than over the last month!

Well we've made a start! The sunset is at least back on the right side of 16:00 again, in Manchester.

The long journey to misery and hell begins, can't wait for that 4am sun to come bursting through to wake me up to another day of sore eyes and sneezing! Just love that time of year, much prefer it to a comfortable nights sleep and feeling well rested!

Theres more to life than sleeping :) I like a good nights sleep but id much prefer to get back doing active things on an evening rather than just sat idle.

I love to see the rising sun casting ever shorter shadows on the lawn as the days progress. Regardless of the actual weather conditions the changes in light levels are a welcome reminder that Spring is approaching.

And the good news is that from here on in, mornings will be getting lighter too so the change finally happening 'both ways' now. Only one way from here and it's upwards! Mmmm I can smell that BBQ right now... :D

I havent really noticed it yet, but I check my rubbish iphone weather app every few days and smile as the sunset time creeps later and later.

Yes it's very striking today - still not really dark at 4:30!
If there is an advantage to a long spell of gloomy weather at this time of year, it's how much you notice the change when it's (almost) clear again.
Sunset here is still just before 4pm but that is 20 minutes later than most of December.
It actually goes behind a hill an hour before that for us, but sky is bright.

Great with our first clear skies for some time I was able to work past 4.30 before having to look for the floodlight !

Really starting to gather pace now with 2 mins extra daylight per day on an evening. Still nowhere near good enough though.

Still Manchester has gained just over 30 minutes since the solstice and today was also the first day with at least 8 hours of daylight. As you said, it will gradually pick up now and before long spring will be upon us (and not a moment too soon either).

Amen to that.

Loving these dark nights, really dreading the return to those long daylight hours. Have always hated the summer months with a passion, much harder to concentrate at work, sleeping so much more uncomfortable, this time of year is so much more refreshing and feels so much better. Will be looking forward to mid june when we turn the corner and start that long journey back to the best part of the year!!

Sun setting half an hour later now 3 weeks after the winter solstice, set at 16:19 tonight but the mornings are still dark with sunrise at 8:30-ish this morning so only gained 7 mins in the mornings so far.

This was the sky at 17:00 this evening.

Each day is gaining around 4 minutes extra daylight now split between the mornings and afternoons so around 30 mins per week it was certainly noticeable today with sunshine right up to dusk

Until it dawns that this is the UK and said BBQ is likely to be held in torrential rain

Not that torrential rain tends to stop people once they've decided to have a BBQ!
