I,of course, love the rapidly diminishing light levels at this time o' year. But the best bit is just around the corner when we lose an hour's worth of light in the evening in one hit and suddenly it's dark at teatime! Can't wait. Oh why can't it always be so?

The only good bit about this clock move is the extra hour to play with on Sunday. Otherwise its annoying and makes the evening commute much more dangerous all of a sudden. Glad to be missing out on that now I work from home!

As soon as the clocks go back I long for March again, light evenings are lovely whatever the weather.

This time next week it will be getting dark... a sobering thought, pity this Sunday is an overcast dreadful one here..

I'm getting drunk with excitement - absolutely love that sudden plunge into darkness at around teatime and the abrupt death of any last vestige of summer and all its attendant horrors.

It was pretty much dark before 6 here today, certainly beginning to feel autumnal / wintry :)

Ahh well much closer to the days getting longer again than since they began to shorten now. The descent will slow down now, especially once the clock change has gone through.

For sure - the dark season is all too brief, despite the constant protestations to the contrary from summer-types. Let's make the most o' it while we can as not many of us are blessed with a gift that way.

spot on lazerguy, the reality is the clocks probably don't even need to go back yet really as it still gets light early enough tbh, though not in scotland and ireland i suppose, but im glad they are going back this weekend anyway

plus people always say it gets dark early now, since when is 5pm early? no one would say you got up early if you got out of bed at 12pm would they

When it gets dark at a time that becomes a nuisance, and prevents people from doing things they would like to do, then i would call it too early. personally i much prefer to cycle home from work in the light, since i go through the countryside, and i would like to get home and look out of the window to at least see the garden for a while before darkness sets in. Come December it feels appropriate for the sun to set at 4pm. Its the decent of darkness in late October that takes a while to acclimatise to.

I think one of the reasons it's done is so that kids can always go to and come home from school in daylight.

It takes a little while to acclimatise to the loss of daylight in the evenings when the clocks go back, but by mid November I have fully adapted. The mornings are preety dark at the moment, sun rising not long before 8am, on wet mornings its a bit of a struggle to get up..

Horses for courses an' all that.... I get up at 4am one week out of three, and it's a breeze doing it in winter, compared to doing it after a sleepless summer night cos of the heat and light. I can't really acclimatise to anything cos I work all the shifts under the sun... and moon.

Apart from the bonus extra hour on Sunday I sure ain't looking forward to the clock move. Darkness then really does infect 'daytime' instead of just evening & night. Also means spending the last couple of hours working in darkness which does my head in!

One consequence of the clock change I hadn't considered is that I'll be coming home in the light after a night shift for a while :(

Try doing nights! Personally I love it - none of that dreadful sunshine nonsense and it gives you incredible flexibility during the day. More folk should try it - especially summer types who whinge and moan about being stuck in the office on 'nice' days. Nick L - how are you finding night shifts?

Don't think I'd like night working. Make it near impossible to socialise with those on 'normal' hours plus my body likes regular routine as much as possible. Will stick to my day job!

Now we're into the gloomy part of the year, I find these programs very useful for controlling monitor brightness:

Flux (http://justgetflux.com) dims the display as the sun sets to an orange colour which is much better on the eyes. Especially useful when it goes from bright, low sunshine to pitch black during the working day.

Dimmer (http://www.nelsonpires.com/software/dimmer/) again dims the display but at your control. Especially useful for dismal days (like today here) when it just won't get light. Although the sun is up (and Flux is in 'day' mode) the screen is just too bright unless you're in a brightly lit room - which I prefer to avoid as it's depressing having the lights on all day.

I much prefer them to days to be honest! I am much more alert at midnight than midday, I think my student days have permanently adjusted my body clock

I imagine come summer with endless daylight and warm temperatures it will be a different matter though.
