it was dark at 8.30 last night in Manchester!

I went out to enjoy the sun but it was too low in the sky even at 7pm - three weeks ago it was still lovely at that time!

Only 4 months till the shortest day

Coming up to my favourite time of the year September to April, just too much light May to August, so glad the kids will be back at school here in just two weeks time, also less anti social behaviour when the nights draw in.

So much to look forward to in the next 9 months like halloween , bonfire night, christmas  and easter, also TV, Sport , video game releases pick up, can't wait for the PS4, Ipad 5, Xbox One releases in October/November, just so much to look forward to Posted Image

Yes isolation and not having to deal with other humans as much will return! Who needs chatting to your neighbours & friends when you can be in front of the tv/xbox alone eh?

Took a photo of last night's twilight, two plane distrails were visible in the cloud layer.

To be honest, I find I chat to people more in the dark season because I have more free time.

Doesn't the "nights drawing in" apply to both the morning and evening? The darkness of the morning and the darkness of the evening are drawing closer to each other, so the nights draw in. I could be completely wrong.

Wouldn't it be '"drawing out"? In the evening it is drawing in and in the morning drawing out. And in the run up to the summer solstice, the days are drawing out in the evening and drawing in, in the morning.

There's certainly less to do (well less choice of what to do) in the dark season. Certainly more time for films, gaming and other sedatory activities!

As far as socialising goes - January is by far the least social month. In summer there's more choice of social activities - this year we've had bbqs, pub gardens, cinema, cycling, house parties and sometimes just meeting up in a field with a few beers. In the dark season the choice is limited to indoor stuff - certainly few beers + running around a field or cycling is a big no no!

Whilst that is actually untrue and inapplicable, what would be wrong with it anyway?  Nights drawing in/nights drawing out and shaking them all about - who cares so long as the hours of daylight keep getting shorter?

It's fine at the moment though at least. Post 7pm sunsets feel ok as you can still see home in daylight. Post 6pm sunsets you can at least get home in light. Post 5pm and it starts to feel grim as its mostly dark when I get home.

I socialise the same, if not more in Winter. I prefer a kick around in Winter than I do in Summer because you don't overheat as easily, for example. I find 10C and drizzle is pretty perfect for that kind of activity.I also find that the short dark days bring my family together. For example, sitting by the fire and playing cards during the evenings.

If "nights are drawing in", what do you call the effect of the later and later sunrises?

"It's dark when I wake up now." - not very idiomatic, but certainly the most common way of expressing the change!

I probably socialise slightly more in summer, the holidays and warmth etc, and don't play on many video games (bar GTA, FIFA/PES, FM) so winter's generally a good laugh as well, I go out lots, and it's often more atmospheric in winter, certainly. The seasons don't really alter my pattern, but I imagine they will in a few years.

What I would say though is I don't understand how you think anti-social behaviour falls in winter Eugene?! Around my area, a few chavs will probably be around on longer winter nights rather in the majority of the summer daylight.

The chavs in your area must be stupid then. Longer nights = chavs out longer, colder, shorter nights = everyone indoors by 7pm (unless it's snowing).

As opposed to the smart chavs!

I don't understand what you mean though; shorter nights, everyone's indoor by 7pm? Longer nights, chavs out longer? It doesn't make any sense?

Current times for Manchester today are sunrise: 5:57am and sunset 8.26pm. Still losing some 4 minutes of daylight per day meaning this time in October the length of day changes from 14h:28m to a measly 10h:15m and lessening further the more we approach solstice in December.

All Chavs are Stupid :L

I quite like the longer nights but only to a certain extent, however I have never really been a big fan of it being light really early, as sometimes when I wake up say 4/5am and its broad daylight I can never get back to sleep. Its okay if there is a storm and can see the structure of the storm, but at the same time lighting is always better in the dark. To be honest im not fussy about any of it, I socialise anytime :)

I live in a chav free area so not an issue (although we do get a summer 'treat' of hearing the couple across the road getting errmm 'busy' from time to time...).

I socialise frequently in winter too (although it does go quiet after xmas for a while) but almost exclusively indoors in pubs, bars or occasional house parties. There are more options in summer for what to do that's all I'm saying.

I have no doubt vigorous exercise is easier in autumn (although less so in cold spells in winter) but 'messing around' outside with a ball with others sitting on the grass having a beer - well no contest!

Also I find sitting around the clanking central heating radiators isn't something we do...

I really don't notice any difference in socialising between summer and winter.

Socialising is overrated anyway. One of the big drawbacks of warm summer weather is the large number of crowds it draws (and the increased number of oxygen thieves chucking water bombs and eggs from the safety of their souped-up Vauxhall Novas).

As well as all manner of undesirable insects, it also encourages human pests to emerge from the woodwork. I hate the pressure I'm put under with the arrival of the light and warmth - as if it's wrong not to 'join-in' with pursuits I could not care less about at the best of times, and all the crap about 'making the most' of the weather. How do I do that exactly, when I hate it to start with? All it achieves is intensifying my contempt!  Anyways - today has 3 minutes and 40 seconds less sun than yesterday.....

Yeah that sometimes gets annoying.

Fair enough I suppose :)

I can't stand the neighbours, and the teevee and xbox don't argue.... tho' they do give me crap every now and again, especially the teevee when some guy comes on spouting about climate change or somesuch nonsense. Friends come and go regardless of the weather/light levels.

Don't think so. Before the summer solstice both draw out and after it both draw in. I always thought it was about them drawing closer together in autumn (and farther apart in spring) rather than which was getting earlier and which later. Or perhaps I've got it wrong.

well we are now two months past the longest day but we have only lost about 70 minutes of light in the evenings, it still don't get properly dark till about 9pm here, if we were on double summer time sunset would still be after 9pm atm, of course in September and October we lose light at a faster rate
