Can anyone answer this for me. The extreme heat in Iberia has coincided with a 'relatively ' cool gulf state atm

..e.g. Dubai maxima are currently 36c which is about 10c less than normal .

By mid next week this reverses and both return to their normal daytime temps. Just wondered if this was related or just coincidence?

Top temp so far is 45.5c over in Alvega, Portugal unlikely to break the all-time European record

Spoke to my neighbor in Spain she said it was no hotter than normal and that it is the silly season, no other news to report on

So for all the fuss and warnings that have been in place over the last month the European temperature hasn't been never broken, the UK temperature hasn't been  broken so is this all just hype a once a year thing that might not happen again.

Exactly! We've had 40c during August in Limousin (France) for the last 3 summers at times. We work, garden, cycle etc. and it's nothing special. The BBC report from Montpellier, where it was 37c, had people saying it was just normal. Hype and silly season as you say, but it's still important for vulnerable people to take care...

Definitely normal for most of Spain (last summer was hotter) but locally Babajoz hit an all time high as well as numerous locations in Portugal.

What a silly comment, half of the weather stations in Portugal reported record maximum temperatures, and parts of Spain were also record breakingly hot. Trying to deliberately play down the role climate change is having on our increasing number of summer heatwaves?

Definitely not normal but less notable in eastern Spain.

More heavy rain over the last couple of days, this time for Valencia province, some incredible totals recorded between Valencia and Barcelona, first over Thursday night -

Nearly 7.5 inches of rain for Almenara and Torreblanca in the 24 hours to 7am. Then further storms on Friday afternoon and evening -

The 21 hour totals to 7pm reached almost 14.75 inches at Vinaros, with 159.2mm (over 6 inches) between 6-7pm before connection to the weather station was lost, which if confirmed would be a national record one-hour rain total. The figure is questionable and under review, but the 21-hour total for Torreblanca is over 11.5 inches, with 10+ inches for the next two stations in the list, and the flooding in the region is undeniable as shown in videos on social media eg - https://twitter.com/search?f=videos&q=vinaros&src=typd

A quick photo of Vinaros railway station shows the "wrong kind of rain" on the lines!

50/50 this is a Brit

Further storms are forecast for the area today, and moreso along the whole south coast, with a red warning for the Malaga area.

Further to the above, torrential rain was experienced in Malaga province of Andalucia with Alpandeire provisionally breaking records for totals between 3 and 6 hours (over 9 inches in 3 hours) -

The earlier rainfall at Vinaros may have broken the totals up to and including one hour -

Outside of July - September it has been a very British year in Madrid, well above average rainfall, often damp/grey/chilly.

Spring was characterised by frequent cool spells and downpours and this November has been incredibly grey and wet, currently 4c and damp/foggy with two more weather systems approaching later and for tomorrow, hopefully it picks up from next week.

A warm flow setting up next week for Iberia and stretching up to the UK low double figures as a max for the UK but in Iberia temps will be into the 20s for some locations

Spain has a heat advisory out from tomorrow onwards. We are near Córdoba and we are expecting temps in excess of 45c. No mist machines here like Paris

Evening all

Just back from two and a half weeks (including Christmas) on Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

You might think the weather in the Canary Islands is pretty uninteresting but you'd be wrong - there's a lot going on and it's not always straightforward.

The principal influence for the Islands is the Sub-Tropical HP (we call it "The Azores HP") which is normally, and not surprisingly, near the Azores. To the SE of the HP cell and especially if the HP is ridging toward the British Isles, there is a fetch of NE winds (known as the "trades"). These bring cool maritime air across the islands and prevent them being as hot as you might expect given their latitude (28 degrees North).

It's not always that straight forward of course - when we arrived on Thursday December 12th and for several days after, the jet tracking well to the south of the British Isles and the suppression of the Azores HP further south-west left the islands vulnerable to a NW flow and occasional showers especially for the north facing coasts. The winds were often quite gusty though nothing like the storm force gusts over Galicia and Asturias in the week leading up to Christmas. Despite the cooler breeze, daytime maxima were still 21-23C with largely clear skies with occasional cloud coming over the mountains from the north of the island.

Another way the status quo can be disrupted is if the Azores HP transfers into southern Europe. This occurred just before Christmas and introduced a feed of E'ly winds from Africa. This was a clear flow on Christmas Eve allowing temperatures to hit 29c but much cloudier (more like a dust haze) on Christmas Day though still warm.

It didn't happen on this visit but if the Azores HP displaces far enough east or NE, pressure can fall over the Islands either with an LP forming near the Azores (possibly as the Atlantic trough digs south and creates a cut-off feature) or an equatorial LP moving up the African coast. Both can bring rain or showers and much cooler temperatures to the Canaries.

It's a wonderful winter location for northern Europeans but 29c on Christmas Eve just didn't seem right.

Some temperatures in Spain yesterday. 29C in early Feb. The 29.6C at Valencia broke the all time record. Temperatures in parts of Italy were also way up above average.

Awesome snow for those awakening in Madrid this morning 9th Jan

Unusual to see this amount, it's associated with Storm Filomena which has been bringing very heavy rain in the south, Warnings shift north into France/Pyrenees during the weekend. http://www.aemet.es/en/portada
