A friend of mine is reporting snow falling in Zaragoza, Aragon today. Heavy rain has given way to snow so a typical evaporative cooling taking place there. Uppers are only 0 to -2C.

Spent last three weeks nw of malaga. Each week we had 38c-42c on at least one day.... The first tuesday we had 42c with the motorway signs warning of extreme fire conditions.... Despite these high temperatures having air con and a pool were great relief...  The last day i was there, last sunday, it was 38c humid, overcast and no breeze.... But getting back to manchester on the monday to be greated by 18c was a shock to the system....the 20c temp difference, not the fact that the uks shocking summer continues....

So... it's snowing in the Basque Country and Navarre, just at 200-300m altitude. The expected snow level was 800m, but due to the heavy and continous rainfall temperatures have been falling all day.

Life on the Other Side (of the Azores High):

I’ve just returned from two weeks in the Canary Islands and thought I’d provide a report on the weather experienced in these little known islands off the west coast of Africa.

The Canaries sit at 28 degrees north and the archipelago consists of six main islands with the furthest east, Fuerteventura, barely 60 miles from the African coast and the southern border of Morocco with the Western Sahara.

As with us, the semi-permanent area of High Pressure we call the Azores High is a huge influence on the Canaries climate but whereas the Azores HP brings us SW’ly winds, the Canaries get NE air from southern Europe and this keeps the islands cooler than you might expect given the latitude.

We arrived on the 14th to a fairly typical synoptic situation for the islands – the Azores HP to the NW leaving the islands in a light NE’ly flow. Daytime temperatures were 21-23c with night values only 15-17c so pleasant conditions by most measures. For those with dodgy geography, the Canaries are right at the bottom of the middle of the map.

AVN_1_2016121400_1.png

The weather is of course never static for long and as the Azores HP ridged toward the British Isles over the weekend before Christmas, the Canaries saw some changes as pressure fell and the islands came under the influence of tropical Low Pressure from west Africa which developed and moved NE up the African coast deepening to become a prominent feature in the western Mediterranean (and bringing flooding rains to Murcia and later Corsica).

AVN_1_2016121700_1.png

For the Canaries, this system brought showers and noticeably stronger NE’ly winds into the Monday and Tuesday of the week before Christmas.

As the north Atlantic flexed its muscles from midweek, the Azores HP was forced further south with ridging over Iberia by Christmas Eve. This suppression of the Azores HP changed the wind direction further south and the Canaries imported an ESE’ly flow from Africa. In the summer this is a very hot wind and can send temperatures soaring into the 30s across the islands but in mid-winter the wind brought a heavy dust haze which blanketed the islands through to Boxing Day. The wind was often gusty but the temperatures remained close to 20c by day and there was virtually no cloud..

AVN_1_2016122500_1.png

On the final couple of days the weather changed again with the Azores HP transferring to Belgium and pressure falling sharply to the west with low pressure setting up the Azores. This turned the wind direction over the Canaries more to the south importing clearer air which meant the haze left but the temperatures were on the rise with 26c scheduled for Friday under clear skies and sunshine.

Humidity was around 50% during the day and pressure never fell below 1024 MB so two weeks with not a SW’ly zephyr to be seen

First snow in 34 years in Denia too. A historic winter for a lot of Europe, and one for all the wrong reasons in the UK lol!

Could anyone who is experienced at reading charts give me there interpretation for the Canaries from Saturday 11th onwards? Normal NE'ly winds would be most welcome...don't want any storms disrupting my holiday! :)

Long-range forecast doesn't look good!

Snow falling in Madrid today. Unusual enough as it is let alone in late March.

Very hot across Spain this week with 40c highly likely for some parts

I don't think 2003 had that sort of heat this early in the season

Indeed, the central areas and beyond within Spain have had a few days of heavy rain and thunderstorms and suppressed temperatures. Friends of mine from when I lived in Madrid have commented on what a summer of extremes it has been so far - hot but also quite wet!

Incredibly hot still in the interior of Spain with  a few stations still above 40c as a plume of 28c 850HPA air from Africa spreads over the south and centre of the country.

I wonder when the 50c record will be broken in Spain - sometime in the next 10-20 years ?
