Pretty exciting stuff from Estofex this morning:

post-2719-0-59379300-1400477854_thumb.pn

A level 1 was issued for parts of UK mainly for excessive rain and an isolated tornado/large hail event.

For UK: Scattered and early CI is forecast. Initial storms may produce a few large hail events, strong wind gust and an isolated tornado. Betimes, clustering storms may cause heavy to isolated excessive rain due to PWs of more than 20 mm and slow storm motions.

Thunderstorms continue during the night next to the synoptic front over W-France. Elevated and weakening clusters however may spread all the way to Benelux until 06Z.

Seems to be a developing cell near Wolverhampton.

A few spots of rain and getting increasingly gloomy here.

Got a isolated cell about to cross over town, no sferics but be nice to get a drop of rain. Showers developing over brum/wolves look interesting.

Had just mainly distant thunder from that storm here in Aberystwyth right till the end just as it was saying good bye it gave a bright flash and what sounded like a small atom bomb going off for thunder!

What a night. I was woken up at 02:45 by thunder and then for about 15 minutes there was frequent thunder and lightning to the SW. Though, no rain fell, here.

Imports tonight suggested?

By the looks of things that could indeed happen across more Central Southern areas.

Things certainly looking very interesting indeed. Hats off to all the models on this one. They've all done a good job calling this, especially GEM which first spotted this really!

Glad some people have had their first bit of action already, but my god, I think we may see a MCS develop at some stage over the continent this week the way things are going.

The temp is rocketing like an over-stimulated helium balloon. 13.7°. Sunny but very humid. It's going to be a hot one today. I think I am in a good place for some action today.

A huge difference between the GFS forecast for here and the met office. Carole K dry and warm once early showers have moved away GFS Thundery showers. GFS cape LI look very good today and again tomorrow. I guess it's acase of wait and see.

The BBC seem to be frightened to mention the T word in their recent forecasts!

I think its fair to say they got burned a few times last year, speaking days in advance of big thunderstorms with little materialising.

I think to be fair they are playing it safe and rightly so...I'd sooner them mention the 't' word 12 hours in advance and be right, than 48-72 hours in advance and be wrong.

Incidentally a stunning start to the day here, notably more humid feeling today than yesterday and temperature rocketing.

Wouldn't say UKMO is ruling much out to be honest - if you run the forecast 'radar' for the next 24 hours you can see swathes of both home grown precip and imported French stuff.

Rain in Birchwood, Cheshire, no report of thunder from a relative. Beautiful sunny skies in Surrey today!

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
