For our Netweather Extra Full and Lite subscribers we now have a lightning archive (using the ATD lightning detection system) online, allowing you to view daily lightning maps right back to 2011.

Ahh that's bad news. makers of the Sheffield shield will be able to see how it's been performing and tweak the darn thing even more.

Pity it doesn't got back further as it would be interesting too see if things have really changed round here.

Doesn't work properly in firefox 29 though. You can't select the date as this is obscured by the resize the map gadget. Works in IE where the calendar is brought to the front so you can select it.

That didn't take long...  Quickest fix ever.

The only problem is is that the page is very CPU consuming. The whole page freezes up for several seconds.

Seems fine here. What does your cpu usage jump too plus what web browser and plugins are you using?

My CPU goes up to 14% and no browsers and plugins don't make any difference.

Not hitting the cpu then.

I suspect the problem lies elsewhere either security software doing something in a untidy manner, problems with hardware acceleration. ISP being slow malware. Anything else going funny?

Just tried it on my 8 meg adsl line and loads up instantly.

Tried a mac in case it's a strange mac thing loads instantly.

I think it will take longer to draw / a bit more cpu when plotting the really massive lightning days with many thousands of strikes as it plots each one individually in the location it was detected.

Yup found a date with lots of lightning on it. That slowed it down and got a script not responding. Also I noticed the ram that firefox memory usage shot up over 1 gig. So pc's with little memory they'll probably grind to a halt. IE seems a lot better in this respect. Chrome even better using half that IE uses. So use chrome.

Ho hum crashed IE trying to go back to netweather extra home page.

LOL Firefox tried to change selection then it timed out and logged me out of Netweather extra.

SO IE and Firefox struggle to handle loads of lightning. Chrome mainly because it opened each tab in a separate process handles it with ease. So there's your answer.

  • 1 year later...

Hi guys,

ancient topic, I know, but I hope that someone is still reading it.

I was wondering whether this data (or a similar dataset) is available in text format?
I'd like to know the number of lightning strikes per month in a specific area over several years, so it would be great if I could just write a Matlab program and have it check values in a matrix, rather than looking at hundreds of individual pictures.

So the perfect thing would be a file containing the raw data of a visualisation like this, with dimensions [lat x lon x days].

Any ideas? Or does anyone know of a similar dataset that meets my requirements?

Many thanks :)
