That sounds like a headline from the Daily Muckspreader

I was just practising for when I apply for a job with The Daily Muckspreader!

HmmmI recall you saying something similiar a fortnight last Monday only to get a storm.

Big difference was, that I was aware the energy was available in the atmosphere, ie it could have gone bang anywhere in the region, I was just commenting on how normal conditions usually play out in the area, ie usually humidity is a little lower here due to topographical influence, thus lower dps and lower potential energy... I was pleasantly surprised when it did happen, but the conditions were generally good in the region that time with that day recording 25C, with some widespread highish CAPE and LI values.

This time however it's a much lower chance over a broader area, though I do expect areas of UK to get some decent thunderstorms, the main energy is definitely trending to the south, as it stands. Things can change in short amounts of time, but as it stands, most of the north of England will most likely not be seeing the sky go bang... but maybe topographical influence will play a hand too, in someone's favour.

Rain, thunder and lightning herec.s

Looks like it's heading my way then.BBC forecast shows our region as the sweet spot for late morning into early afternoon although I'd suspect heavy rain may be more widespread than thunder and lightening.Edit, first crack of thunder from the south.

Here's the lightning strike map for last month by the met office

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/summaries/anomacts

Notice how central spine of Northern England did poorly for lightning.

East of the M6 for northwest England is often used as a marker for snow prospects, interestingly it was west of the M6 for thunder and lightning last month.

No thunder here and none in most places I imagine. It was too cool in the end. By this afternoons cold front the energy may have stabilised too much

I wouldn't bother. It's raining pretty hard but other than the odd rumble of thunder nothing in the way of storms so far.TBH it's starting to brighten up a bit which although means that the heavy rain is passing may give the warming needed to get the storms going.

I can't believe the thunderstorms shifted to the east. Whats happened to the storms to the south of me!? Another season, another disappointing one I bet. That's life I suppose. :(

maybe a few homegrown ones this afternoon then.

Its bright down here, milky sky and modestly warm breeze.

To be honest here I wouldn't call it warm at all, it's quite chilly, especially in the breeze. It's currently 12C, and the temperature is not responding to the rain having stopped. The only thing that can give any chance for storms now, is if there were to be home grown storms, but this is unlikely, and requires sunshine in the next hour.. which we may not get, especially if there is a cloud bridge between the trough and cold front.

The temperatures however, are the biggest concern, although the GFS was quite happily plugging 20C by 3pm, I'd be extremely surprised if this was the case.. more like 14-15C by the time the front comes in to those where the trough has already cleared. I'm not sure what temperatures we need to initiate storm development today but I suspect both the 850hPa and surface level temperatures are both inferior for development.
