Glorious end to official summer lots of warm sunshine and a very light breeze here in the NE @ 20.6c currently

This coming week looks pretty good as well with temperatures up-to the dizzy heights of 25c for London later and very little rain

What a pleasing forecast. Good to see September making up for Augusts failings.

Seems to be the norm nowadays. To be honest I now have higher expectations of September than I do of August, in terms of summer weather.

Yep seems common now rubbish August and a nice September

A lovely end to summer, a warm sunny dry day, more like August should be.

I've said before its been a good summer, wonderful for nature, the garden has been in constant growth - superb conditions in this respect. I'll give it a 7 out of 10, very respectable, but nothing special.

What's the formula for the summer index Kevin? I'm interested where 2014 lies here.

An awful end to yet another poor summer. Over an inch of rain in the last 4 days and yesterday, which was supposed to be better, was rubbish with overcast skies until 3pm and yet more rain in the evening. A foul 23 days of measurable rain in August which beat August 2012 to be the wettest summer month in my records. A ghastly month.

This summer has seen the same horrendously abnormal patterns that prevailed from 2007 – 2012 putting the North East of Scotland in the firing line for the worst of the weather instead of in the rain shadow.

Here I had 203.6mm  - wetter  than summer 2008 (199.0mm) and 2010 (178.6mm) as well as being duller than 2009. So of the 6 dire summers from 2007-12 it could only be said to be unequivocally better than 2007, 2011 and 2012.

In the Moray Firth it must be close to the wettest summer on record with Lossiemouth having 318mm – 181% of average - compared to just 186mm in 2012 and 265mm in 2011.

Yet again the weekends have been utterly dire. Even in July most of that month’s rain fell at the weekend. Shockingly there was not a single dry weekend something even 2007 and 2012 managed.

Breakdown of average daily sunshine hours by day of the week shows Saturday dullest by far:

Mon - 6.21, Tue - 7.43, Wed - 4.86, Thu  -4.39, Fri -5.70, Sat -3.73, Sun – 5.71

Breakdown of average daily rainfall in mm by day of the week shows Sunday wettest by far:

Mon -2.34, Tue - 0.54, Wed -1.65, Thu -2.71, Fri -1.40, Sat -2.89, Sun - 3.84

8th summer out of 8 that the weekends have been duller than weekdays and 6th out of 8 that they have been wetter. An utterly ridiculous situation that defies any rational explanation.

This year it is much worse because of the rubbish Spring as well. I have counted only 6 sunnier than average weekends since the clocks went back in March and only two of those were completely dry.

I just can’t put into words how much I have hated 2014. I have never known a year to have an almost complete absence of wind from the SW quarter as this year as had bar a few weeks in March. This combined with the record-breaking low average pressure, the snowless winter and the persistently poor weekend weather has made it a total nightmare without any redeeming qualities.

The Summer index is 10 x [(mean max of summer) +(total sunshine)/67 - (rain days/8)]

Here since 2001 (no sunshine data before then unfortunately):

2006: 273

2003: 260

2013: 259

2001: 233

2005: 231

2009: 230

2010: 230

2014: 225

2002: 217

2007: 214

2004: 214

2011: 203

2008: 201

2012: 185

A middle of the road summer, which is shown in the stats aswell:

Mean Temp: 16.1C (+0.2C)

Rainfall:  193.8mm (112%)

Sunshine: 604hrs (107%)

Mean Max: 20.2C (+0.6C)

Rain Days: 54/92

This summer will be remembered for its sustained sun and warmth more than anything else. Plenty of days across the country in the 20 - 25C bracket, but only a few of 28+

If you enjoy sun and reasonable warmth over a long period then this summer beats last year; if you prefer having a more intense period with temps regularly in the high 20s or early 30s then last year wins.

indeed, alot of 20-25c's, which for me suggests a decent, pleasantly above average summer but not one of those classic greats. but... id happily have every summer like this one was if it meant we removed the risk of both a 2012 and 1976.

Yes 11 years since our last good august of 2003,a far cry from all those great augusts of the 90's

law of averages would suggest we are long overdue for a decent august...

very  interesting, ive no index nor data, but i think your index is accurate for derby too... id agree with 2014's position .

i hate this time of the year.... so what if its warm and sunny sometimes, the mornings stink, they are chilly and dank. nothing to look foreward to until next spring after the horrid cold winter eases its grip.

So you wouldn't be bothered if it rained for the rest of September - because smelly mornings mean sunny, warm days are pointless? Weird.

The Summer index is 10 x [(mean max of summer) +(total sunshine)/67 - (rain days/8)]

How are the criteria for, in particular, sun and RD attained and why these the figures divided by? Thanks Kevin.

For here an apparently mediocre 204 score, but the mean would be lower than Manchester I guess (cooler/ more RD).

Working: Mean max 20.2c x 10 = 202 + 8 (540 estimated sun hours total/ 67) - 5.8  (47 rain days/8)

In fact I would class it a decent Summer. August cooler than June which is quite unusual
