Ok, can we draw a line under what happened last night/earlier on this morning....The site team are well aware of what's been occuring and are on the case....Posts have been reported and moved from the appropriate threads....Onwards and upwards as they say

 

 

So then, are you guys going to see any snow tomorrow??

 

Unfortunately not by the looks of things.. Surface temps and dew points for a start too high.. no PPN around when they do drop off sat night...

If the likes of Steve Murr and TEITS were about i would feel more confident re snow, but their silence is a sign to me it is not going to happen, or at best it will be a blink and you will miss it affair

I am glad you said that as nobody else mentioned the storm we had in the middle of last night here so i was thinking either i imagined it or it was very localised! There were strong wind gusts which woke me and even now the wind is gusting very strongly.

Hi Ian - I'm not trying to guide anyone, I'm no more special than anyone else  Its a thread where any of us have the opportunity if we wish to give an opinion on the weather ahead . Its not a competition, or about right or wrong, as much as it shouldn't be on the MOD thread either, and I have done with that thread anyway.

 

 

And this is exactly the type of thing posted in the MOD thread directed at me over the last few weeks that makes me leave

If CanadianCoops wants to pierce his left nut, Tamara, let him go ahead and do it. 

 

I really do despair at the level of aggression and all-round chippiness displayed by some in the MOD thread at times.  Can only reiterate what everyone else has said on this much more civilised forum - PLEASE don't stop posting over there. Let the sweaty, pre-pubescent schoolboys jostle for position - hopefully you can calmly rise above it and show them for what they really are. I think quite a few of us have given up on that thread this year - here is a much more pleasant place to be, but Tamara's posts IMO are of huge educational value for those who are serious about learning more about the science behind the weather. I can understand them, anyway!

 

Anyway, if the moderator wants to delete these comments, that's fair enough as I appreciate we need to move on - sorry, didn't see that post until I had already sent this one.

Well, the met has relaxed it snow threat from most of this area, so, as you were folks. Put the sledges back in the sheds.

It's actually the area 'at risk' of seeing any snow ..... So a downgrade what a surprise - not that I was ever expecting to see any significant snowfall here !

The area most likely to see anything is the mountainous central and Southern parts of Wales and perhaps some far Western parts of the West Midlands, with the timing looking like snow is most likely to fall between midnight tonight and 1pm tomorrow afternoon.

So unlikely that we will be seeing the snow event that is currently being portrayed by the media......the London Evening Standard, Daily Mirror and Meridian News are all reporting that 'experts' are warning of snow for London and the south east - Meanwhile the Daily Excess is forecasting the UK to be blanketed in 8 inches of snow - The Daily Star are forecasting a mini heat wave for spring so that's ok then !

Thanks to everyone with their very kind messages of support - it has been a relief and a nice surprise for me to read so many of them (and pm's as well)   Tomasino is 100 % right - I am genuinely quite self deprecating in real life and have been genuinely surprised at some of the nice things people have been saying in recent months. From my female pov, I admit that posting rather solo on the MOD thread and attempting to provide some (hopefully!) helpful information has not been easy and it is true it takes a lot of thought before pressing 'post' as I worry how it comes across and what sort of impression it presents of me as so few women do this type of thing it seems. 

 

I know a cross section of guys and girls read the thread, but it is the actual participation in it - with all its ups and downs with the one-upmanship, rutting (as I call it) and point scoring that means its necessasry to try and stay steady, ignore it, just keep going and sticking to the topic at hand which is supposed to be under discussion.

 

However...it's on this basis that it fast has become impossible to continue when personally directed comments start appearing as they have recently - especially incorporating unecessary bad language (which are especially even more offensive and disrespectful when aimed personally) or simply just digs at posting style.

 

I am an ordinary member just like the rest of us and have no special qualification and certainly don't expect or deserve special treatment. However, for me at least, the increasing number of personal digs and posts that have been appearing in recent weeks, (allied with the fact that it is not me being paranoid or precious or anything here, but I do happen to know that behind the scenes there is a core element within this forum as a whole that, for reasons I cannot fathom,  don't like me and/or and my posts) then I admit its hard to not get discouraged and let that get me down. 

 

I think therefore that I will take the advice some of you have helpfully suggested that the regional thread is the safer place to stay if I want to discuss anything related to weather patterns in future.

 

I'll try not to write too many pages, I promise! More seriously, on this basis though, and I have been aware of this for some while too - there remains a place for all of us (that is if we so wish) to add weather related info on whatever level we are able. There is no exam to pass to post opinions on here (or the MOD thread either). Its the weather - it does what it does and for me its simply fun and rewarding to try and learn a bit and then see what happens afterwards with the model output. Its simply a bonus if things come right - but its not about being right or wrong.There are participants on the MOD thread who are interested in being right all the time and squabbling on this basis of preening some fan club ego. 

 

Its about learning and explaining your thinking as I see it (this being the reason why I was doing continuation posts of my own on the MOD that have been wrongly interpreted as self indulgent ego) 

 

Most important of all, I strongly believe that as with most all things in life that come about from being human, its exactly all about making mistakes and getting things wrong - that is where we learn and benefit the most. And therefore how we can benefit one another the most too 

 

I think the banter on these threads, balanced with any on-topic weather related info/technology is at least as important as any topic related learning..otherwise without any personality flavouring the proceedings, each thread would last a year and we would all adopt the manner of micro chipped robots!  There are lots of us on these pages who provide an endless array of imaginative (and sometimes spectacular!) pics as well as some great humour and writing style. Much more besides too in terms of support for those of us with big health and/or family worries..job worries too. How obvious has that kind of wonderful support been obvious in recent days f.e? Just to give one example. The list of other benefits isn't exhaustive obviously

 

I haven't mentioned names in this post, simply and honestly because I don't like risking excluding anyone - but perhaps one of the most enjoyable aspects of a little community like this is enjoying looking out for any opportunity to give credit to anyone who takes time out to make any contribution - whatever it may be. That is one of the personal hopes and aspirations I had for the MOD thread as well - but it is so much harder to do in there sadly. No surprise that not enough people who visit that thread either don't learn, or sadly are unable to learn anything

 

Not everyone likes the idea of meeting people beyond the virtual world, and I think that it is absolutely right that personal choice and comfort in this respect is as valid as personal circumstance  However, I think that benefits are there to be gained on any occasion this can happen, as it breaks down the type of virtual perceptions that people can build up of one another and sometimes lead to the type of problems that arise on internet formats/websites like this where people are constantly meeting as 'typed words on a screen' (in some cases almost daily!) and it is bound to cause artificially skewed impressions.....one of the biggest risks of the internet world if it becomes too much of a regular meeting place beyond the real world.

 

Clearly for some people it is not possible for a variety of understandable (and sometimes unfortunate) reasons to be out and about beyond the computer world - but it does show how the sort of online problems that we all encounter at some time can arise where face to face contact never occurs over long periods of time. It's not healthy..or natural in my opinion.

 

OK, I think I have just written the type of essay that would have gone down a storm with a few (not!) on the MOD thread! So I best shut up!

I apologise and feel rather awkward for the discussion being centred so much around me (as so very kind and friendly as 99 % of people have been) - like I said earlier, we are ALL equals here and also as AJ says, we can now return to discussing the usual every day things...with a weather related flavour of course!

Hi all. Lovely sunshine here which is why I have been a bit absent. Enjoying playing with the dog in the garden and not sodden mud!

 

Tamara I am so saddened to read this post. It is so disheartening when people have to make personal insult to people on forums. After all, a weather forum is one of the very few with topics which are very difficult to get right. Anyone who can't see that really isn't learning anything. I have joined forums with other subject matters as the main topics of conversation, and some people are just so damn nasty because they hide behind the screen. I am not a prolific poster here - been a member for many years - I am not very clever with weather, but I think it's awful that personalities get in the way rather than enrich the forum tapestry.  

 

I remember being part of a car forum on the internet some years ago. We all got on fine online and we arranged to meet for a Christmas meal. 40 people sat in virtual silence around tables in a pub til someone piped up "I think we need to have brought our computers with us so we can talk to each other". Unfortunately, that meeting also showed that people judged books and covers and the forum fell to pieces with snide arguments a few months afterwards.

 

Sorry, I don't usually speak out much on here, but I just wish people would stop what is, in effect, cyber bullying.

 

Keep writing Tamara and everyone else on this section. I have learnt a lot this Winter by all your posts - ramped or not - and to lose out on this valuable knowledge would be a travesty.
