Words/Phrases ETC You Cannot Bear to Hear or Say

Recommended Posts

I wrote a post in the 'Things that tick you off' thread about the use of certain words which make you cringe, your toes curl and you think...Aaaaaaagh! on hearing them.

So....what words, phrases can't you tolerate hearing or can't bring yourself to use?

I'll kick of with....Wee, as in 'I'm just off for a wee', or 'I must wee'. 'Pardon' for excuse me...'settee' for sofa...'lounge' (except in hotels & pubs) for sitting room. And worse....much much worse....the proper, clinical terms for, erm....bits. (Naughty Bits) I can't say, write or even think them. Oh God....ghastly. :O

Fortunately it doesn't apply now but my ex mother-in-law saying, "I'll be coming to visit tomorrow"

Mind she did give me the excuse to paraphrase Oscar once. We were on the phone and she said, "I passed your house last evening". I replied, "Thank you".

Chicken when it's pronounced 'Chickun' instead of chickin.

Hubby for husband.

Not so much phrases, but ones said incorrectly such as "I could care less" - which implies you already have some level of caring.

Smug-faced weather presenters saying that today will be warm and dry with light winds and lengthy sunny spells, or something along those lines. Am I actually expected to like such nonsense or are they just rubbing it in?

Another one when people say "should of" or "could of", it's HAVE, not OF!

'Guesstimate' Cannot stand it, you either make an estimate where you've put some thought and effort into it or you just have a guess.

I hate that "word", too! When watching a nature documentary I struggle not to punch a wall when I hear the term "She-Bear" when referring to a female bear.

Yes - very annoying, and I've noticed that folk don't just say it - they write it. Are they doing it on purpose or are they naturally dense?

"At least it will be mild"

Also, people starting the answer to a question with the word "so" even if the word has no relevance whatsoever.

When i hear people say..... 'It's too cold to snow'...I feel like saying if it was -40 there maybe some truth in that, but when it's around or just below freezing or even -10 if that matters,

we can have buckets of it.

A myth or an old wives.... it's just complete rubbish...it drives me Posted Image
